It's quite a shame for the men - nobody cares how artistic you are now if you can't do quads.

I don't know. Jason Brown, who is known more for his artistry than his spectacular jumps, just finished third at the recent international competition in Taiwan. Finished in front of jumpers who can't match his grace and musicality on the ice.
I think the judges still love that artistry. It's kept Jason on our Olympic team.

I actually don't like Jason Brown - I think I was thinking more of Adam Rippon, who is slightly more athletic than Brown but about as artistic. Brown seems like a watered down Matthew Savoie - anyone remember him?

But I really enjoy Nathan Chen, the quad machine. And I preferred Evan Lysacek over Johnny Weir. So maybe I prefer athleticism over artistry.

I really just want to watch Virtue/Moir ice dance all day.

Hanyu is listed on the Pyeongchang Olympics site as competing for Japan this year, so I guess he's going. Medvedeva is also listed (under Olympic Athlete from Russia).

Things kick off for figure skating this Friday in the men's and pair's short programs for the team event. Individual medal events start next Wednesday.

Oh frack. Nathan Chen just blew his short program big time.
Unless he's skating with a case of the flu, I'm afraid he's come down with a bad case of the Olympic 'yips.'

I'm not watching network tv so I won't spoil but... things do not really get better until the last men's skater.

I was sad but then I realized it's team figure skating, not singles, so they can work out their nerves/kinks and hopefully do better in the men's skate.

From men's to pairs, I don't know if I ever recall so many falls for one night of skating. Actually kind of remarkable.

Patrick Chan seems to have same type of jumping gremlin plaguing him as Nathan.

Now, the Not-a-Russian Kolyada fell twice in a lackluster skate.
Chan, Chen and Kolyada were all wearing black costumes with silver/grey accents.
Maybe the guys need to change to a luckier color scheme?
ETA: Uno from Japan finally broke the Black&Silver Costume Curse and had a pretty nice skate.

I really liked the French and German pair skates. The one was very cool and sexy and the other lively and cute.

Johnny & Tara may be the best thing about NBC's skating coverage, IMHO, as their comments skated seamlessly between sweet and savage. The skaters may have been falling all over the place, but Tara&Johnny stuck their landings.

I think I'm going to skip watching the replay from those events, as much as I love watching people fall for hours.
