Crupi `Leaves a Huge Void’
The American Turf is a less colorful place today as horsemen everywhere mourn the loss overnight of one of its most vivid and accomplished characters, James “J.J.” Crupi. He was 79.

His many grieving friends in the business could comfort themselves that while Crupi had suffered health problems for some time, he had been able to persevere in what he loved doing—and did as well as the very best—right to the end. In fact, some of them had enjoyed listening to him holding court, despite his deteriorating health, on the opening day of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Old Sale this very week. For he had never allowed his difficulties to interfere with his ebullient embrace of life.

Only weeks ago, he had hit the headlines at the same company’s Gulfstream sale, topping the auction with a $3.65 million son of Curlin sold to agents Donato Lanni and Jamie McCalmont on behalf of M.V. Magnier. If he can justify his price, however, that colt will only be the latest in a litany of Grade I winners educated by Crupi at his New Castle Farm outside Ocala, including Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) and champion juvenile Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie).

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Colonel Samsen. Unfortunately, he suffered a heart attack while galloping this morning. Samsen was the first homebred that I was involved with & opened the door to many other opportunities. Thank you for everything, Samsen.

On The Black Eyed Susan undercard, Congrats Gal suffered a heart attack after crossing the finish line of the Miss Preakness Stakes. Her connections were visibly distraught over the loss of their special filly. Here she is in the post parade and there were no signs of any problems prior to the incident.

Surprisingly, I had read about him breaking down in both the Paulick report and Bloodhorse. I recall being surprised that Fasig-Tipton admitted to it. His grandsire was Rock Hard Ten, and I cant help but think he looked a lot like him. I had a Rock Hard Ten mare, he really stamps his progeny with his looks. Poor babe.

Poor baby indeed. These 2YO under tack sales simply have got to stop.

They really don't need to go that fast. He was on the turn pulling up so he wasn't going at rocket speed. It occurred when he switched leads according to the outrider.

Its in the article and in the video, like I said.

I mean it doesn't say mid-March but in the video Jane Lyon said Aubby K. died suddenly and tragically when the filly was 6 weeks old.

Silk Justice (JPN), 1997 Arima Kinen (JPN-G1) winner and sire, has passed away at the age of 25 at Hatakeyama Ranch due to what I believe to be infirmities of old age. His other victories include the G2 Kyoto Daishoten, G3 Kyoto Yonsaitokubetsu, and Wakakusa Stakes. He was also placed in the G1 Japanese Derby, G2 Hanshin Daishoten, G3 Kyoto Daishoten, and G3 Mainichi Hai. He finished fourth two years in a row in the 1998 and 1999 G1 Tenno Sho Spring, behind Special Week and Mejiro Bright, respectively.

He retired with a record of 27: 5-3-3 and earnings of ¥457,970,000 ($4,226,147). He raced through age five.

Foaled March 18, 1994, chestnut Silk Justice was a son of Brian's Time, out of the Santigo mare Yuwa Meld. Silk Justice is the sire of stakes winners Typical, Silk New Hit, Shihoneri, Wink Prayer, Simple Melody, Atomic Age, and Bashi Ken.

Good old Menifee - pretty decent racer. Brings back many memories, especially those Triple Crown races against Charismatic, and, of course, the Haskell. In following older runners at the bush tracks in the interior, I'm amazed at how often he shows up in the pedigrees. RIP Menifee...
