Derby Day Undercard
Did anyone catch the NBCSN piece on the Santa Anita deaths? Jerry Bailey was VERY critical of the whip, said it looks terrible when a horse is being whipped. One of the co hosts said to Bailey ‘You wouldn’t have said that back when you were riding’ and Bailey responded with ‘Of course not but times are changing’ or something to that extent anyway. Any thoughts on that?
I'm not sure why NBC decided to go into this on the sports' biggest day.carole wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 2:56 pmDid anyone catch the NBCSN piece on the Santa Anita deaths? Maybe they figured if they didn't they get a sh*tstorm from the antis about how they're "ignoring it!!!"

I think it would have been pretty glaring if they hadn't addressed it at all. I hope this is the last time we hear about it, however. They gave it it's due and now it's time to focus on celebrating the present.
Maximum Security is still technically favored, but Improbable is catching up as more money pours in. About 100k separating them right now.

NBC doesn't address CTE in their NFL broadcasts. They don't about players who beat their wives. I don't hear them talk about problem soccer players when my boyfriend watches soccer. They just talk about the sport.Tessablue wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 3:25 pmI think it would have been pretty glaring if they hadn't addressed it at all. Not only that, you have Bailey's extraordinarily damning of whips. I'm not saying he isn't allowed an opinion but as an ambassador of the sport you know that the public will never educate itself on the topic. How do you possibly even say this on national tv?

Mine That Bird looks good in Western tack.
So fun and crazy! I love watching that close up of Borel’s boot literally scraping against the tail. I can’t find it on YouTube.Somnambulist wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 3:50 pmThe great 2009 Derby. This is, without a trace of sarcasm, my favorite Derby ever.

The turf races I've watched so far haven't been good for front runners, even when they are very good runners. Closers are closing the deal.

Do those awful No More commercials count? I do think racing is held, fairly or not, to a different public standard, so I don't mind their attempt to address it as long as it focuses more on the present from this point forward. Fully agree that Bailey's comments were not helpful, but I thought the Layden piece was pretty good.Somnambulist wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 3:48 pmNBC doesn't address CTE in their NFL broadcasts. I was not expecting a Mine that Bird retrospective. Loved seeing him!

awwww mine that bird - one of my most favorite geldings ever - so happy they did a piece about him today on his 10th anniversary of winning the Derby.
sincerely, I think his run in that Derby was one of the greatest performances ever by a horse winning the Kentucky Derby. and when you use the term 'blew the doors' off of horses in a race... that's exactly what he did in his Derby win. his gallop out after was even impressive.
just an amazing run by a brave little horse - and he ran pretty damn well in the Preakness and Belmont too.
so great to see him again - and its really nice they took him to Sunland Park today so people can get up close to a Kentucky Derby winner. love it. love him.

I'm not sure it's on the air anymore, but after the Ray Rice fiasco (which the NFL only cared about after video was released to the public) several big-name players got together to make a commercial about domestic violence.

Andi'amu won the VA Gold Cup in a minor upset. They let him set a slooooooow pace on the front end and he led most of the 4 miles.
Yep. To my memory, reactions were mixed at best, but in the wake of all of the league's denial and floundering it really didn't land.Somnambulist wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 4:19 pmI'm not sure it's on the air anymore, but after the Ray Rice fiasco (which the NFL only cared about after video was released to the public) several big-name players got together to make a commercial about domestic violence.

Now they wear pink gloves for some games, so everything is fine

The Mr. Money/ Mr Money Bags box is completely irresistable right now.
