I don't want to post this because it's news I'm sure no one wants to read, but it's true. TVG just announced. Trapped epiglottis.

Omaha Beach out of Derby with entrapped epiglottis, per Mandella

Omaha Beach will be scratched from the Kentucky Derby owing to an entrapped epiglottis, trainer Richard Mandella said Wednesday.

"He was coughing, which made us suspicious, and we scoped him," Mandella said Wednesday night.

"It's not anything we can fix to have him run on Saturday, so we're going to have to scratch him."

That's too bad. I really like him. Hope everything turns out OK for him. Gotta feel bad for Mandella.

I feel terrible for Mandella. I felt like this horse was going to do it and am bummed he won't get to run the race.

I so badly wanted Omaha Beach to win this. Spendthrift must have known something was up when they bought the breeding rights. That makes more sense to me now.

Porter said the throat issue became apparent in the past five days, and an April 29 scope revealed the problem. Attempts to manually adjust the epiglottis were unsuccessful.

"He's going to have very minor surgery next week and we hope to have him back in training as soon as late June or early July," Porter said.

That's a shocking development, and I'm so sorry for his classy connections.
And unfortunately, Mike Smith now is eligible for our 'Jockeys Who Picked the Wrong Horse' thread. :(

Fox Hill has some rotten luck.

I’ve been high in Omaha Beach since the Rebel :( sad he won’t get to run his race, but I’m sure he’ll be around for the summer/fall races and stamp himself a top notch horse.

Omaha Beach to miss Kentucky Derby with entrapped epiglottis
... “He was coughing, which made us suspicious, and we scoped him,” Mandella said.

“It's not anything we can fix to have him run on Saturday, so we’re going to have to scratch him.”

Mandella said the issue is “fixable,” but the timing is terrible.

“He’ll miss two to three weeks of training,” Mandella said. “Alysheba had it a month before he won the Kentucky Derby. But we can’t fix it and run this weekend.”

Mandella said the problem is that Omaha Beach has “swollen tissue under the epiglottis.”

“It’s entrapped, so it can’t do its job,” Mandella said.

Mandella said this was not comparable to needing tieback surgery, something Kentucky Derby entrant Roadster underwent last year. ...

They have had some great luck too. This is horse racing. How many can say they had a Hard Spun, Havre De Grace, and a Songbird.

There goes my $28 on Omaha Beach.

I'm actually still very, very confident. The more I think about it, the more Max is going to win easily. He's the FASTEST horse in the field. Even if OB was in the field, Max would beat him. His final 3/8ths was like 7 lengths faster.

His odds are obviously going to go down but I already made my bet on him when he was still 11-1. I was reading Baffert's statements and he knows Maximum Security is very dangerous.
“I think he is a quiet secret. I think he could do it. He is a good horse. No one is talking about him, but I think he is a very good horse,” said Baffert, who saddled Justify for a victory in last year’s Kentucky Derby on his way to a Triple Crown sweep. “I think Gary West is looking pretty good for the Kentucky Derby.”

It's still a lost for me with OB scratched. Reminds me of Beholder before the 2015 BC Classic. But the more I actually look at Improbable, the more I think he has a pretty good chance as well. The #12 post isn't exactly a winning post like #5 & #7 are.

It's disappointing but the connections sound like they have every intention of running him this summer. Something to look forward to. Always something.

really rotten news about Omaha Beach - feel terrible for Mandella and Porter - absolutely thought they had the horse to get them into the Derby winners circle this year - and very sorry Omaha Beach won't get the chance to run... he was looking so strong and gorgeous - head bowed during his gallops - even the weather was on his side for Derby Day.

now just hoping he will come back stronger and better than ever - would love to see him kick some rear in the Travers and BC Classic later this year.

but such a major disappointment for two really fine classy men and I hate that part so much.

Mandella said races like Haskell, Travers are options this summer. If needs more time, Allen Jerkens at SAR on Travers Day is tempting.

"Allen Jerkens introduced me when I went into the Hall of Fame," Mandella said. "That would be something, to win that race."
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.
