Happy Derby Day, everyone!

The first race was won by a wide rally with a longshot on the rail in second, second race was wired by the favorite with the runner up making a wide rally for second. Nothing stands out so far, but we'll see how the rain impacts things.

Next up: Lookin at Lee and Sonneteer make another Derby day appearance.

I'm keeping an eye on how some of the Derby trainers do. Baffert's first horse came in 3rd in the first race.
Also looking for a stream for the undercard I don't think NBCSN starts coverage before noon do they?

I'm just watching through a flaming pile of garbage... I mean, Twinspires. Unfortunately don't know of any current streams but it's just allowance races for a bit.

Santana smarter than the average jock?
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Lookin at Lee, who apparently has some early foot now, stalked a longshot the whole way around and comfortably held off a wide late rally from Sonneteer, who did his best to close into the slow pace.

Definitely a nice ride by Santana to take advantage of the pace.

Agree on the flaming pile. I opted for the free trial of Sling Blue to watch the Oaks yesterday. Today I'm at someone else's home who has cable...

Started on an online NBC Sports stream.
Justify and Mendelssohn have floated up slightly (7-2 and 6-1) My Boy Jack is still down at 5-1

He won from Last to First! Track is fast... he won the mile in 1:35 and change.
Interestingly Brian Hernandez says he'd pick Mendelssohn to ride if he could be given the choice of any mount in the Derby.

He would've said YES to any horse if only his phone would've rung!

Of course, but she specifically asked him who he would pick if given the choice out of all 20. I expected him to say Justify or maybe Good Magic, so I thought it was interesting/surprising.

Is Moore restricted by contract to accepting other mounts not trained by AOB on Derby Day?

I have no idea but I don't think so. RM is the first choice jockey for Coolmore and AOB but he has very regularly ridden for other trainers and owners.
If there are any contractual obligations I would guess maybe that he can't ride another horse in the same race as those connections? (Unless he might have a pre-existing regular deal on another horse that ends up in the same race).

Churchill Downs
‏@ChurchillDowns

The condition of the @ChurchillDowns main track has been changed to MUDDY (sealed) after prior to race 6 on #KyDerby Day. The turf course remains firm in Lane 1, on the hedge.

I think the rail must have taken a lot of moisture (too much) and is now deep and tiring. Nice, easy win for American Gal who was running out wide and controlling the pace.

Man, I thought My Boy Jack's odds were due to a single 100k win bet, but there's more than a million on him right now. I'm sure things will even out once the internet money comes in, but what a strange turn of events.

Seriously. It's one of the more interesting things I've seen on Derby Day. Wise guy horse on steroids. Wet tracks make people do weird things.

I mean the weird thing is that he was bet down 5-1 before it started raining, since yesterday. I wonder if people think that person knows something they doesn't and it created a domino effect? Wet track probably now just exacerbates it. Crazy.
