wishing all the best to the lovely Winx! and if she wins tonight (10pm pacific time I think - hoping TVG shows the race!), and arro throws in another clunker tomorrow.... hoping to see her named as the number one rated horse in the world - she will most certainly be deserving of it!

TVG is definitely showing her race, and maybe most of the stakes from the different Oz tracks tonight. Sky Racing's Jason Witham (sp?) is in town for the weekend, and will be in the TVG studio tonight to help Candace cover the Down Under cards.
He will then be at Del Mar tomorrow (not much sleep for Jason :P ) to cover the Pacific Classic for Sky Racing and the Australian fans.
We are being treated to the two best horses in the world, both running within about 20 hours of each other. :D :D :D

That was an absolute cracker of a race. Seriously. She strolls out of the gate, at a distance shorter than she prefers really, and STILL wins by a long neck. Goosebumps, the mighty mare has no equal.

Would love to see a head on replay of the start. Apparently she went the last 400 Meters (2 furlongs) in 20.7 seconds. That's pretty insane considering she isn't a sprinter/miler really.

I love watching the replay of this race - she just flat out zooms to the wire - she is digging in and giving it everything she has - what a huge heart - this mare showed such fight and tenacity - you just have to love and respect her.

Candace was curious to see what the time was going to be, and Winx did set a race record for the mile. Her last three furlongs were run in 34.6, which is damn fast.
This mare has won from 5 1/2 to 11 furlongs; she has both stamina and sprinter speed. She has beaten top stayers and Chautauqua, who may be the best sprinter in Australasia.
Street Cry has sired two truly great mares in Winx and Zenyatta...it's a great loss to the breed that we lost him in 2014 at only 16. :(

Winx — what makes her so fast? It's not the size of her stride, it's the rate she can put it down
Every minute Winx is in full motion she takes 170 strides. That's 30 more than the average racehorse, with each one about seven metres in length.

It's an unusual formula for a champion sprinter, especially when compared to the sport's greats like Black Caviar and Phar Lap, each with a stride length close to 8.5m.

"Many think the horse with a bigger stride will always win," said Dr Graeme Putt, a University of Auckland academic who has studied the science of racehorse success.

But Winx is turning conventional wisdom on its head.
