I'm sure the objection is to Zenyatta at #1.

My impression is that SI was influenced in some of its choices by wins in one of the Triple Crown races. That may be why Rags To Riches joins Genuine Risk, Winning Colors and Rachel Alexandra on the list. Although her total career was not as impressive as those other three, it might have been hard for SI's editors not to be swayed by her outstanding win against Curlin in the Belmont.

Ruffian is the top female race horse of all time, this isn't even debatable........an argument can be made for Personal Ensign to be number two over Zenyatta who should be number three~

Shouldn't a list of all time include more than just three horses from father back then the 80's (with 2 being in the 70's.)?

Also didn't we discuss this list before?

Ranking order aside (I'm among the many who would put Ruffian at #1 btw), I'm not sure they could have found a worse photo of Zenyatta if they TRIED!!!

Not sure about this statement in regard to Azeri, unless the word "has" was supposed to be "had" (at the time of her retirement):
  • The mare also has the distinction of being the leading female horse earner in the sport, amassing $4,079,820 in prizes at the time of her retirement in December 2004.
Ouija Board had career winnings of $6,312,552 and Zenyatta came in at $7,304,580.

This is a list of top fillies EVER... since 1969. Maybe that's as far back as anyone on the staff wanted to look. I'm not sure who else I'd add to the list, but it's hard to believe that the top 10 fillies of all time (100+ years) includes Rags to Riches with 5 career wins. I think I'd knock her off the list and put in Twilight Tear for starters.

"...I'm not sure they could have found a worse photo of Zenyatta if they TRIED!!!"

Agree. When I came to that shot, I wondered WHY they had used a mere head shot of Zen, when she was so beautiful and powerful in full flight. And almost all the other fillies had been shown striding out in a race.
Was it so important to show Zen's owners? :?

Might not agree with the order but I feel the top six are Top Ten material. However, I immediately thought of a few great fillies of yesterday....Twilight Tear, Davona Dale, Bewitch, Gallorette, and Dahlia just off the top of the head. I guess this is the color television era Top Ten.

Definitely a post mid-century list. Gives somewhat of a back-hand salute to the likes of Busher and Miss Woodford and Regret, and did
I miss Go for Wand and a dozen others? I like their list, but if you really get into it, there are some omissions that are at least very worthy of
consideration.
I do agree with Barnfour though, Ruffian is the queen of the fleet. I can never go against Lucien Laurins' assessment of that horse...

Rags to Riches might not belong in a list of the top 50....and I agree it's too top heavy with recent horses. Clearly some mentioned here ( like Cicada, Go for Wand, and Dahlia ) would have been reasonable choices. I won't comment on Zenyatta, who obviously belongs on the list, but number one seems a bit dubious. How about All Along?

Or Goldikova or Black Caviar.
Unless the list was limited to American horses?

It may be a bad case of deja vu, but I'm pretty sure we've had this discussion before, based on this exact same list from the same source.

I still don't understand why Lady Tak continues to be shunned by listmakers.

Nice surprise to see Ta Wee mentioned. I don't see her being talked about much. The rest...ehh, there are some that I think legitimately deserve to be there. Some...not so much.

Anyways, I think Shuvee deserves a mention too.

Since we're talking about an American magazine I'd say yes. If we're thinking about international mares I'd throw Sunline in there too.

If this is really an "all-time" list then Kincsem ought to be on there too. Along with Fashion, Beeswing, and my namesake.
