Re: 2017 Kentucky Derby Watch Party

The overhead camera, I think during the Woodford Reserve (may have been an earlier race), was so high that the low level clouds got in the way and you could barely see the horses--looked like they were running through fog. Good job.

Re: Trainers et al

Post race interview that I saw, TP had tears in his eyes. Just because he doesn't "dab" like Baffert, doesn't mean he cares any less. When I get rewarded for something, I don't make a spectacle of myself either. I don't want to be center of attention. I imagine that I sound robotic when I am. Some ...

Re: 2017 Kentucky Derby Watch Party

This was the first year since Super Saver that I haven't gone to Churchill Downs to watch the Derby. I never watch the network coverage, so I only hear after-the-fact how people reacted to it. After watching two days of NBCSN/NBC this year, I actually have to say I mostly enjoyed it. I thought they ...

Re: Oaks Day Watch Party

They are replaying the 2007 Kentucky Derby. I can't believe how many good sires came out of that race. Scat Daddy, Street Sense, Curlin, Hard Spun. Hard Spun ran huge in that race. Especially not being his ideal distance. What a great crop. Yes! And I had to laugh, because I just became friends wit...

Re: TVG and Churchill Downs

It is nice to have all the undercard races on a hi-def channel...IF all the races are shown. I worry most about the long time slot on regular NBC. I wouldn't shocked if they skip over one ( or more? ) of the Derby undercard races in order to run more human interest/fashion fluff pieces. Firs...

Re: In memoriam 2017

Swan's Way was 15 when he was retired. I saw him run many, many times at Suffolk. The thing I'll remember, though, is the "(VI)" after his pedigree which, if correct, meant he was bred in the Virgin Islands. I highly doubt that -- his classic Mellon bloodlines would point to Virginia (VA), and the ...

For the first time in years, I'm skipping Churchill Downs this year and watching from home.

So for everyone who will be playing along at home, here's Kentucky Derby coverage bingo

I'mawildandcrazyguy popped up out of the blue! Re: Cameras and the Haskell (advice needed on how to proceed

Monmouth is super strict about cameras. They even hassled a friend of mine for her crummy Nikon Coolpix because the zoom on it extends from the face of the camera. I wouldn't plan on taking much into Monmouth, they've clamped down pretty hard in the last year or so. When they say "we reserve the rig...

Not a Thoroughbred, but this is Jenny and her colt, born a day or two ago. Jenny was Gunnevera 's nurse mare and is currently located at Brandywine Farm. Jenny will return to her owner soon in case she's needed as a nurse mare again (she was only at the farm to do a news story for the Derby, but end...

Re: The VENT Thread

Eight months ago my dog got very sick. It was some sort of systemic bacterial infection and he almost died. I've spent every waking moment of the last 8 months nursing him back to his happy, sweet, smart, loving self. It's been hard and very expensive, but worth every single dime and every single mi...

Another used the comparison to the shipping woes in "International Velvet" (maybe an unpopular sequel to National Velvet) and said that even though it is fiction - and takes place in 1944 - horses travelling/flying is unsafe. International Velvet was filmed in the 70s, and that scene they're talkin...

Kingston Bay suffered a cardiac event after collapsing at Gulfstream Park. So Kingston Bay didn't race for 3 years, posted 3 workouts within 20 days of each other, raced twice this year and died of a heart attack. I don't like to second guess trainers, but off for three years and then all that acti...

Re: Report: Pimlico Race Course Needs $300 Million Renovatio

Does it really need to be "economically competitive" with Belmont and Churchill Downs? I don't know why this study centered on that--if you've been to Pimlico recently, you know it's never going to be.
