Re: Stallion News

Colour me impressed than the actually noted and reported one! I really an surprised. So, begs the question.....will DOC be tagged for that and essentially not make the 1st/2nd/3rd crop sires list? I suspect that the sire lists will ignore the one foal and track DOC with the rest of his peers. The s...

Re: Stallion News

Actually there was a sire in the Keeneland January sale (I can't remember which one) whose description said that his oldest offspring were yearlings aside from one foal that had been born in late December the previous year. Edited to Add: I just looked it up. It was actually the FT February sale and...

Re: Stallion News

Even if it happens.. those foals will all have a birthdate of January 1st... lol I always wondered how they policed that... They used to police it. The JC would send inspectors to random farms at the end of December. They had a list of the mares who were supposed to be at each farm and they would i...

I would imagine that several foals will arrive early next January.

Re: Investor behaviour and personality in the Thoroughbred y

Though I've bought my share of yearlings (and bred more) it's hard for me to see how the words "investment" and "Thorougbred yearling" belong together.

A hind leg that is straight, as in not crooked, is desirable.

A hind leg that is straight, as in not much angulation (ie, post-legged) is generally not.

Re: Photos/News about Broodmares

What a shame. So much hope, lost before its time. :( Question about breeding fees; since Pepper's Pride lost her American Pharoah foal, will she get a free breeding back to AP? Part of the 'Stands & Nurses' portion of most breeding contracts? "Stands and Nurses" means that the stud fee isn't paid u...

Re: Genetics Vs Opportunity

I think opportunity plays a huge part in a horse's success. Perhaps even more than raw talent. A talented horse with a trainer who's not a good horseman or who is simply sloppy and/or careless, or a horse with impatient owners or exercise riders who just don't give a damn, is going to have a hard ti...

Re: Broodmare Valuations

If you can afford Unrivaled Belle, you should buy her. It is a little unfair to say that she hasn't produced much when she only has 2 foals of racing age. Her current 3 year old is unraced, but her 2 year old ran 2nd in her first start for Jerry Hollendorfer and is working lights out (a best of 75 5...

I'm a believer. We bred a G2 winning, multi-G1 placed filly (by Candy Ride) out of a Street Cry mare. After we sold that Street Cry mare, we quickly picked up another.

Re: Keenland September (12-25) Yearling Sale

The First session saw gains in most numbers, including buyback, but average and median are up. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/214968/solid-start-to-keeneland-september-sale I saw two horses sold for $7,000 and $9,000, normally prices aren't that low in the Select sessions. Its weir...

Re: Older mares vs Younger mares

Younger mares get the best opportunities. It is a rare old(er) mare, even one who has produced well, that is bred to stallions the same caliber as the ones she started with, mostly due to the prejudice against the offspring of old mares. It is true that older mares tend to produce smaller foals whic...

Re: Foals of 2016

I've never understood why the internet is so dismissive of April and May foals. In real life, everyone is happy to have them. The months with the highest numbers of TB foals are March and April.
