It just looks like a ding to me. Colts play hard and it doesn't take much to skim off some hair.

Re: Racehorses as foals

Having seen a baby pic of a well known, recently retired stallion with legs as crooked as a crow - one would think that broodmare owners would ask for foal photos as part of the decision making process. The majority of foals are born crooked--there's a lot of leg on a foal to cram into a very small...

Re: Lack of top outcross sires

I think you are painting with a very broad brush to blame the Northern Dancer/Mr. P cross for the current unsoundness--or perceived unsoundness--in the TB breed. There are many, many reasons for the fact that racehorses are making fewer starts than their ancestors did. I personally wouldn't put gene...

Re: Lack of top outcross sires

I'm quite certain that I didn't call any of your three outcross stallions "crap". I merely pointed out that they are not as successful in their sire careers as many other sires who are related to either Northern Dancer or Mr. Prospector. Basically it sounds as though you are disheartened by breeders...

Re: Lack of top outcross sires

The reason those two stallions are so prevelant in American pedigrees is that both sires have worked enormously well to produce good racehorses. For that reason, very few breeders are looking to breed away from them. That being said, there are several current top 20 sires who have only one cross to ...

Re: Horse Sense

Here's the dictionary definition of outcross: out·cross [v. out-kraws, -kros; n. out-kraws, -kros] verb 1. to cross (animals or plants) by breeding individuals of different strains but, usually, of the same breed. 2. to produce (a hybrid) by this method. noun 3. a hybrid animal or plant so produced....

Something on the prevalence of Northern Dancer in modern pedigrees and three new stallions without his blood: http://racehorsewriter.blogspot.com/2013/11/pedigree-profiles-prevalence-of.html Speaking as a former journalist, I feel compelled to mention that if you hope to build a following, your blo...

That Deep Impact colt is very handsome (and half-brother to a new G2 winner since Wine Princes won the Falls City Handicap yesterday at Churchill Downs.)

Re: First Winners

Dunkirk vs Pioneer of the Nile. The reality is that we won't know who is the better stallion for a couple of years, however for me breeding racehorses is all about the dream. Most stallions can get a fair percentage of winners, but the quality of those races is all important. If we compare the two ...

Re: New Conformation Photos

I think they made Animal Kingdom look rather over at the knee in that shot. Especially the right front looks like he's up on his toe. He's a beautiful horse, along with Frankel and Bated Breath but all three needed someone who could get them standing more square and not leaning or shifting weight o...

Thank you for the pictures, tachyon! I love Empire Maker. We were fortunate to be able to breed to him before he went to Japan. I would love to have the opportunity to do so again. You are always welcome, TBird. :D I now believe in Empire Maker's big success in Japan, especially when Shadai Group b...

Re: Fasig-Tipton November 2013

This still does not change the fact that our racing industry down the road is going to suffer from the depletion of our wonderful mares and stallions. Especially the mares, that really upsets me. So what if I am just a fan at the moment? I want to see a quality horse at the track, I want our countr...

That's a bigger jump than I was expecting, but Claiborne shouldn't have any trouble filling his book.

It is probably full already.
