Re: Clever Names for horses

MORTICIA (f, 3, Twirling Candy - Halloween Party, by Mr. Greeley) won the Coronation Cup S. today at Saratoga.

That deserves some finger snaps!

Re: Photos/News about Broodmares

For the news of such a top-class mare's death to go completely unreported, except for the paperwork submitted to their Jockey club... I just ran across a 2017 Jockey Club death report for Pike Place Dancer. She won the 1996 Kentucky Oaks, so you'd think it would have rated a paragraph or tw...

Re: In memoriam 2017

There's a 2017 death report filed with the Jockey Club for Pike Place Dancer, winner of the 1996 Kentucky Oaks. I haven't seen any articles about it, though.

Re: The Preakness

According to the Paulick Report McCraken came out of the Kentucky Derby with a puncture on his left hind leg. His trainer said that the Preakness is not an option for McCraken and the Belmont would be doubtful.

Re: Ranking the Derbys: A Quantitative Analysis

Well, there goes my summer :D Thank you so much for posting this, I can't wait to dive into it! Just in case you run out of stuff to do, there's a 2017 Belmont Stakes Media Guide listed at https://www.nyra.com/belmont/about/media-guides . Not sure if the charts are there or in the 'History' media g...

Re: Ranking the Derbys: A Quantitative Analysis

You could hypothetically apply it to any race that has a reasonably strong historical correlation between pace and final time. I'd love to do similar figures for the Preakness and Belmont; however, I don't have historical charts readily available for either of those races. If I get my hands on a me...

Re: Bend Or & Tadcaster

There's a page about historic pedigrees and genetics at http://www.tbheritage.com/GenMarkers.html that has a link to one of the first papers that looked at mitochondrial DNA (passed from mother to all offspring) and female families. It's quite fascinating.

Re: Pedigrees- source for

Equibase has already been mentioned; it's a good source for US and Canadian horse race records, but often doesn't have much about other countries. Pedigree Query, also already mentioned, is a good source, but pedigrees can be edited by users so may not be entirely accurate. http://www.pedigrequery.c...

Re: Sires of Kentucky Derby Winners

Would be interesting to have a break down of other sire lines. Here's what I came up with - It's difficult to determine where to break the Darley Arabian Sire Lines - I hope this makes sense. The winning sire line is bold for each year. 1990 Damascus - 1 Icecapade - 1 Nasrullah (not Bold Ruler/Seat...

Re: Sires of Kentucky Derby Winners

Curiosity's sake, how many times since 1990 did the KD field include a runner from a Mr. Prospector line stallion that didn't win the KD? This may provide your answer (bold year indicates the winner was from the Mr. Prospector line) Year - Mr P line/Field Size 1990 - 3/15 1991 - 1/16 1992 - 1/18 19...

Re: Your favorite horse ever. 1 horse.

Man O' War When I was little, he was the first race horse I learned anything about. This was the 70s, so I read the fictionalized version of his biography that Walter Farley wrote, then I found some things at our library about him. I couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 years old, I guess. He had pa...

According to one of his co-owners, he's named after a small town in Kansas.
