Re: Cozmic One

I thought I read that Affirmed and Alydar recognized each other when Affirmed arrived for stud duty at Calumet. Apparently, one of them threw an absolute fit, as if saying, "YOU AGAIN?!?"

Re: American Pharoah

International Star is slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Too slow. This is Ramsey's best hope to date, but when Kitten Kitten has run every other year that isn't saying much. I think this crop is too deep for a TC winner this year. I really do hope I...

Re: American Pharoah

Who has he run against this year that people have been talking about as Derby horses? I like AP a ton, but I'm not sure I like him for the Derby. This is where I'm starting to drift. Too many worries. He's wicked good, though, and maybe his talent will just outweigh everything. This is one crop tha...

Re: Steve Haskin's Derby Dozen

Sad to see Bolo off the main list, but I totally understand why. At this point, focus and attention must be given to the horses that are definitely going to the Derby, and performing like they stand a chance. At this point, if Bolo doesn't go, I"m leaning toward a 3 or 4 horse exacta box that will d...

Re: Santa Anita Derby (G1)

I have no idea what Mike was doing with Bolo. Wide pretty much the whole race, way off the pace (he's more of a stalking type), and late starting his run with that pace, and pretty much blew the final turn. Idk what was going on because Bolo didnt seem to be fighting him and didnt seem to be struggli...

Re: The VENT Thread

It sounds like it could've just been self-centered obtuseness, too. Obviously you're in the situation and can tell if they're being catty or not, but part of that sounds like they just forgot they weren't the only people needing to buy the dress and who might benefit from knowing about the sale. Wh...

Thanks for letting me know about that Ziggy! I'll keep an eye out for its progress.

Side note:
Have we still not seen pictures of the Animal Kingdom/Honey Ryder foal? I really REALLY want a look at that little one! :-/

Re: Mubtaahij

Pedigree is just one angle I look at, but it is my favorite. For the TC, I also employ herd dynamics, recent form, etc. The female line is actual a better indicator of performance than the sire line, as most believe that the speed should come from the sire and the stamina from the dam (hence breedin...

Re: Mubtaahij

But my point is that there is usually at least one sprinter/miler type who goes out there on the lead and will duel anything that goes with him. If either (or both) of the Baffert horses does that, then they'll be cooked by the top of the stretch. And, as I've pointed out before, there isn't a ton o...

Re: Mubtaahij

Read the post directly before it. To say that Dortmund and American Pharoah can't hang with Mubtaahij for more than a furlong severely understates what those horses have accomplished and severely overrates what Mubtaahij has, and that's before you take into account the fact that he'll have traveled...

Re: College Basketball

Great game! Right until the last few seconds I thought the Irish might pull off the upset and knock out Kentucky. I really think the Cats are going to go all the way this year. I would love to see a Kentucky vs. Louisville championship game. I think that, once again, the NCAA handed a win to KY. (T...

Re: Foals of 2015

That explains the whole Last chance corral thing. I couldn't understand why there were all these young foals for adoption with no mares attached. Sorry, it's hard to access the site and comment from my phone, and hubby had commandeered the only working PC in the house yesterday. Yes, I was referrin...

Re: Mubtaahij

There's usually some whining about the fact that this race gets Derby points, but there's no doubt in my mind that adding this colt to the mix makes the race a lot more exciting. We haven't seen much late acceleration in our preps this year; I think he's a big threat if he likes the surface and I'm...

Re: Foals of 2015

The conversation at the BH article on Groupie Doll makes me a little insane, yet there are legitimate questions being raised -- it's just too bad it can't be discussed more amicably. One week doesn't seem to qualify usually as premature, yet the baby clearly wasn't a strong one. The mare could've g...

Re: Am I a Snob? Why I Don’t Like Doodle Dogs

I hate to play the paranoid card, but....maybe you should report that dog before he charges that inadequate fence and gets in your yard? A healthy adult German Shepard should be able to jump a 4' fence with ease. :( I will, but I want to give the neighbors the chance to remedy it first. We are stil...

Re: Steve Haskin's Derby Dozen

If I understood it correctly, the sire only passes the Y to a son, so it has no bearing if a colt's sire has the gene. However, a mare can pass the x along to a son or a daughter (definitely so if she is a double copy mare. Read Frank Mitchell's Racehorse Breeding Theories book if you're interested....

Re: Steve Haskin's Derby Dozen

The large heart gene is believed to be passed from sire to daughter and from daughter to son. So, it's not a big reach at all. There are a lot of what are known as "double copy" mares for the large heart gene in BB's distaff side (Special, Rough Shod, Bramalea, Natalma, and Almahmoud) Can't go sire...
