Re: The movie thread

Yes, Coulson died in the first Avengers movie, but.... Yeah, he's back, thanks to some disturbing surgery and a dose of alien blood...:o...which has given TV's Agents of Shield much of its intrigue. You need to watch Agents to keep up with certain story developments/characters that end up playing o...

Re: The VENT Thread

Wow. I know the breeder I got my papillon from has strong opinions about the vaccine issue (she doesn't believe all of them are necessary on the timelines given by vets). But, she does do all puppy shots, rabies, distemper, etc. That being said, I wouldn't dream of having a dog spayed or neutered be...

Re: What Are You Reading?

Watched The Theory of Everything a couple of weeks ago and just got Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time. I dropped physics class, so who knows if I'll understand it, but I think his work is fascinating!

Re: Derby - biggest disappointments?

That was something about Firing Line that surprised me. In his patterns of motion report, Kerry Thomas said that Dortmund had dealt Firing Line a "crushing " psychological defeat in the Lewis. I took that to mean that, if FL had to get past Dortmund, he would defer to the bigger horse. It could be t...

Re: What's on the Derby menu?

I normally make burgoo, but it was just WAY too warm for that dish. So, I made a braised "drunken" brisket instead. And, since I've been craving s'mores for about a week, whipped up a s'mores "poke" cake for dessert. http://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a35428/braised-brisket-bourbon-p...

Re: Football draft

I'm already loving the Bears' first round pick, Kevin White. Read up on him this AM. He was turned down by D1 schools for his grades. So, he went to community college, raised his grades, transferred to WVU, and put up big numbers there. That tells me he isn't afraid to work in order to reach his go...

Monty Durham from Say Yes the Dress: Atlanta. I think this would be on most people's "best dressed" lists. Maybe he should give a seminar next year?

Re: Derby - biggest disappointments?

Kinda played out like I thought except for Mike dekocks horse I was thinking he would be in the top 5 same for Upstart I also was thinking De Kock's horse would do better. Otherwise, sort of expected the top four, though not necessarily in that sequence. Add me to those disappointed in Mubtaahij as...

Re: The Derby Picks and Analysis Thread

Took me forever to get my chart done, but it came out this way: Dortmund, Carpe Diem, Firing Line, American Pharoah, Bolo. Mubtaahij just outside the top 5. If I analyzed the numbers a different way, I still got Dortmund on top, followed by by Carpe Diem, Bolo, Firing Line, and American Pharoah. It ...

Re: 'Wet Blanket' returns

Does this have anything to do with with blowout yesterday that came back kinda slow? I think it was 37 and change. I don't know how de Koch blows his horses out, but he claims he makes the decision around what he thinks the horse needs. For Mubtaahij, maybe you look at the questionable quality of t...

Still in the 17. All horses from the 1 to the 7 move out one. Good news for Ocho Ocho Ocho, Carpe Diem, and Materiality.

Re: 2015 Kentucky Derby News & Notes

One of the things that struck me in January was how lovely this pack of names really is. I'm a name nerd and that makes me really excited. Even the ones that sound like they're from YA books (International Star reminds me of that a bit) are nice enough to look at. I just get very nervous about some...

Re: Mubtaahij

Actually, my philosophy is that if you are really looking for a Triple Crown, then you should theoretically be looking for a horse who can run 1-1/2 miles, not 1-1/4 miles. :D That whittles down one's KY Derby list quite a bit more. That is one premise that some people start off with in the first p...

Re: Mubtaahij

(interestingly, I've found that a lot of people who like him also like the other two horses I'm focusing on, Frosted and International Star. I think people certainly give different weight to different handicapping angles, and that is displayed in their picks. I believe that track performance outwei...
