Re: Foals of 2020

Coolmore has a FB video up of Justify foals and as a group (of course they picked nice ones) they're very impressive--and cute.

Re: Santa Anita to close ...

Treve, I appreciate your science, but in Los Angeles it definitely is "activist" influenced. There is a guy on some official board governing animal welfare who periodically insists that all shelter animals be fed a vegan diet--and it is seriously discussed!

Re: Santa Anita to close ...

Yeah, for the past few years they've run short (not) boutique daytime TB meets at Los Alamitos. It's just too obvious a solution, although I suppose the CHRB would have to approve the switch somehow. But given how they were indifferent to SA's fate (I mean, didn't the Governor agree that it was "ess...

Re: Foals of 2020

While I love chestnuts and chestnuts with blazes, Justify seems to be passing on wide, sloppy blazes that I really don't like. They're cute on foals, though. I find it funny you are saying that because just below that Justify foal, there are California Chrome, Roaring Lion, Kitten’s Joy and Golden ...

Re: Santa Anita to close ...

No person should have that much power..... From the LA Times story..... “The drama started Wednesday morning when an environmental health specialist in the Monrovia office of the L.A. County Public Health Department deemed that the track should be shut down. “ ‘After review by our Department, live ...

Re: Santa Anita to close ...

I'm not so concerned about not being able to watch live racing; I'm worried about the horses. Thousands of racehorses - TBs, QHs, SBs - across the country will no longer be able to earn a living. The stables may stay open, with backside workers still caring for their horses, but how many will be ab...

Re: Santa Anita to close ...

What little I've heard is that the CHRB turned it over to local authorities and that Los Angeles health authorities ordered the shutdown.

PETA must be ecstatic---the same PETA which recently exulted that the "silver lining" to the coronavirus was the reduction in "animal abuse."

Re: Stallion News

That video of Arazi is incredible. 30! He's still just a gorgeous horse. I thought I noticed that he stayed on his wrong lead almost all the way down the stretch in the BCJ. A great talent--Bertrando, who he blew past, was a very good horse indeed. Poor Bertrando. He would have been a 2x BC winner ...

Re: Kentucky Derby and the Coronavirus

What does the Wood Memorial have to do with the Kentucky Derby? jk ;) The 2004 and 2005 wood memorial are how I respectively fell in love with both Bellamy Road and Tapit Bellamy Road was the first stallion I ever "met" in Kentucky, in 2007 at Hurricane Hall on a van tour. He was led out and stood ...

Re: Kentucky Derby and the Coronavirus

I understand the hit Louisville's hospitality industry will take, but. . .join the club. That seems harsh IMO. If the race can be run at a time when Louisville can allow spectators, that could save the livelihoods of thousands of folks. I'm willing to bend some traditions to do that. And the horses...

Re: Kentucky Derby and the Coronavirus

Yes, Maxfield is one who will benefit if he's good enough. But he won't be on the first Saturday in May. I'm one of those who just thinks it should be cancelled if it can't be run in the spring, I understand the hit Louisville's hospitality industry will take, but. . .join the club.

Re: Kentucky Derby and the Coronavirus

I was wondering about the future book bets too. They ought to be refundable--the whole calculation has changed now. But I heard CD is planning to do MORE rounds of future pools! It's always a sucker bet, but this year, more than ever.

Re: Kentucky Derby and the Coronavirus

I don't know how it works in Kentucky, but wouldn't they have to get dates? Of course I assume the Kentucky authorities would approve anything. Another issue with September is that trainers would have to decide whether to crank their horses to the max for the "Kentucky Derby" or the BC. I'm guessing...

Re: Kentucky Derby and the Coronavirus

Postponed. So, more Derby preps? More points? Training schedules gone awry? Makes Charlatan look like a better bet and who knows who else could emerge. The curse of Apollo could well have gone down this year. I read that Aqueduct's Friday handle was up 28%. No other places to bet. Most venues don't ...

Re: Rebel Stakes Saturday @ Oaklawn

Even Baffert would admit that the corollary to his success is that a lot of horses get chewed up and spit out (who might have had more success elsewhere); his mantra is "the good ones can take it." That's why I'm cringing at the idea of sending Maximum Security to him. But I agree that human athlete...
