Re: Report: Zayat Sued for $23 Million, Sold Shares in American Pharoah

Crooked is as crooked does. Seriously, this guy must have one heck of a gambling problem. I remember Fifth Third suing him back in the day. I had (erroneously) thought that with Justin joining up things might calm down but evidently the Zayat's are kinda like the Mafia. (No offense to any Italians ...

Re: Bramlage's Mongolian Groom report

When I fractured ribs from my horse flipping over on me, nothing showed on the xrays. The healed fractures showed up on the xrays I needed 6 months later when I had another xray taken. And my x-ray (I broke a rib coughing once when I had pneumonia) was read clean at the time, only for me to get a p...

Re: Santa Anita 2020

So, the horse that broke its leg on the training track on Thursday was trained by Doug O'Neill. Since the tracks were closed to training, this happened at a jog or gallop, and isn't the training track an all weather surface? My first thought is this has to be on the trainer, doesn't it? Breaking do...

Re: Santa Anita 2020

Santa Anita will serve Christmas Eve dinner to 350 backstretch workers and their families, and there will be Santa, music, decorations and presents for the children. This makes me happy for such a hard working and dedicated group. Costs them a lot less than replacing the asbestos-filled firetraps m...

Re: Stormy Liberal gets trainer switch

I was skeptical as soon as I saw Peter Miller was crying about a horse's welfare. He had one of the most frequent breakdown rates while I was at the tracks.

Re: Two Zayat horses to be sold over unpaid bills

Just like the Baffert special treatment "revelation," this is not surprising at all to those who pay attention and remember. He's screwed over other big trainers in the past. He's also screwed over his horses multiple times. Have to be oblivious or desperate to take any horses from him anymore.

Re: Article in New York Times states Justify failed a drug test before the Derby

I was born and lived the first 29 years of my life in California, but moved to Arizona two years ago because I couldn't put up with it anymore. How many people have to move out of the state for the politicians to care? The same amount that have to boycott horse racing for the powers-that-be to care?

Re: Article in New York Times states Justify failed a drug test before the Derby

Curious to hear from anybody that saw this interview yesterday, as recapped in the LA Times newsletter today..... NBC’s telecast of the Pennsylvania Derby addressed the Justify issue by bringing in veteran journalist Tim Layden to discuss it with Nick Luck. I’ll state up front that Tim and I are fr...

Re: Article in New York Times states Justify failed a drug test before the Derby

Nevertheless, the chrb acted to hide information, then did closed sessions, changed rules after the fact, and other levels of high impropriety. YES. This is the story. Horsemen, Baffert fanboys and media cheerleaders are going on and on about jimsonweed, or the Derby points. I don't give a s*** if ...

Re: the CHRB: I understand why these 'conflicts of interest' are considered a problem, but.... If there is a board that will affect how my sport is officiated, I know I'd prefer to have people on that board who are well-informed and intimately familiar with my sport. Where do you find qualified peo...

Re: Article in New York Times states Justify failed a drug test before the Derby

So do people still really believe Bayern shouldn't have been DQed. The CHRB deserves to have the State take it over. YES. I was standing in the box in front of owner Kaleem Shah and his family when the Bayern won, and former CHRB commisioner turned boss of Stronach Corp/Santa Anita (which was a big...

Re: Article in New York Times states Justify failed a drug test before the Derby

It stinks to high heaven all around. Getting so jaded about everything. :( :( Been there, done that, quit racing, no intention to return. I worked in the So Cal racing industry, and saw this kinda crap firsthand and also heard stories from a handful of people I trust. At first I didn't want to beli...

Not surprised. The conflicts of interest in racing, and California in particular, are outta control. I'm sure Baffert's been given special treatment more times than we realize.

The first one that came to my mind as well. I was screaming for the quirky underdog, but the blah Euro won again and instantly killed the crowd's buzz.

Paulick Report article about Hollendorfer's fatality stats being in line with the national average. I can attest to the quote at the end about them checking every horse top to bottom every day and jogging them based on my experience working in his barn one summer. Jerry wasn't there doing it himself...

This whole thing shows how amateur-hour P.R. is in the horse racing industry. Just ban someone because there's a chance something might happen and you'd have to, you know, do your job and defend yourself or something? No, just keep posting cute pics of your buddies kissing horsie noses and that'll m...

And just as a side note....
Baffert has an appropriately named 2YO filly making her first start in the second race....
"We're Still Here" ;)
Wasn't there a trainer that had 7 horses die in like 18 months with no real explanation at Santa Anita a while back? I forget the name.

Re: Chad Brown has been ordered to pay more than $1 million ....

Are backstretch workers paid hourly or just a flat rate as contract employees? It varies. As a hotwalker, I was paid hourly. But there was no time clock, so they paid me based on the set hours I was supposed to be there every day. If it was my turn to come back in the afternoon, or help for a race,...

Re: Chad Brown has been ordered to pay more than $1 million ....

Not surprised. It happens all the time, in horse racing and all industries that exploit immigrant labor. And that's such a big operation, the amount of money is reflective of that. I worked for four different trainers, and it was the Hall of Fame one with multiple, large strings that screwed me (and...
