Re: Happiness

The first test said it probably was cancer, then they said it probably wasn't , then I had to wait three weeks for a biopsy result that should have been returned in one week because they forgot to call despite me calling to ask every day for the past week, and after all that they said it's probably...

Re: Question about breakdowns

Really interesting, thank you for posting it SC! I'm glad they acknowledge that it's likely because bute is being used to mask soreness in horses, and not because it directly causes injury. I don't think it would be at all fair to ban it outright (I still feel awful about poor Runhappy and his conne...

Re: The BC Picks and Analysis Thread

Sorry if I'm talking to myself in here; been making this thread for years and it's weird not to have Kennedy or peep in here to bounce ideas off of :( Sorry I wasn't around to join in with the chat. Seems like you did just fine! Congrats. Enjoyed reading your analysis even retro-actively. I've foun...

Re: Accident Prevention

Just to clarify for those reading, the chart says Always a Queen was uninjured. ( http://www.equibase.com/premium/chartEmb.cfm?track=BEL&raceDate=10/05/2019&cy=USA&rn=4 ). It seems she wants nothing to do with being a racehorse. Edited to add that she was uninjured in today's race as well: http://ww...

Re: Tragedy hits Santa Anita again

Yeah... I did read that almost immediately after it was posted, so maybe I'm being extra hard on him. It was just tough to think of the BC as "darn close to perfect" in the immediate aftermath.

Re: Tragedy hits Santa Anita again

TDN Podcast: Pletcher on Mongolian Groom Tragedy: We Have To Do Better In this week’s TDN Writers’ Room Podcast, future Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher didn’t mince words when talking about the breakdown of Mongolian Groom (Hightail) in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the rash of breakdowns that h...

Re: Tragedy hits Santa Anita again

Good news, thank you for sharing it! Some good news out of Lone Star today as well: https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/236895/facility-improvements-announced-for-lone-star-park Among the approved enhancements are: • A cooling down area for horses, located about 100 yards beyond the fin...

Re: Breeders Cup Discussion?

No worries Charlie. I know you're not someone who wants to keep things as they are, just thought your post could be used as a springboard for exploring some feelings on the subject. Apologies if it came off as accusatory. I think we're all having a bit of trouble articulating how we feel right now. ...

Re: Breeders cup mum on Mongolian groom

Sure, but there's a middle ground here. For example: Arthur said the death of Mongolian Groom will be investigated by CHRB enforcement officers. Further information release is unlikely until that investigation is completed. The Breeders' Cup, in its statement the night of Mongolian Groom's fatal inj...

Re: Breeders cup mum on Mongolian groom

That information is of particular interest in light of workout videos of Mongolian Groom taken before the Classic. Multiple veterinary sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity say videos shot throughout the week appear to show the horse favoring his left hind leg at the trot. ... Shortly aft...

Thank you Laurierace! I'm very glad to hear that they aren't treating this year's spring as a freak one-off event.

Re: Breeders Cup Discussion?

The football players don't die on the field, and I don't think the general public would take the "well more horses could have died" argument particularly well. There's a curious sort of contradiction with racing fans- we complain endlessly (and justifiably) about crooked trainers, drug usage, and un...

Re: Breeders Cup Discussion?

The sad thing is, I think they genuinely did make improvements (despite some diversions like the Lasix debate they admitted was pointless and that whip rule that lasted... what, like a week?). But somebody dropped the ball here, and it seems like they're falling into CYA mode again. Which simply isn...

Re: Breeders Cup Discussion?

I don't think racing is endangered at a national level quite yet. It has many wealthy and influential investors, and Kentucky will definitely fight for it. But in California, its days may very well be numbered, and it is doomed either way if public support dries up and betting revenues plummet. I do...

Re: Question about breakdowns

When I was at Laurel for their presentation on the remodeling project, the TSG rep seemed pretty sure that climate change had a lot to do with the racing surface at Santa Anita..they were citing this as the reason for installing a Tapeta training track.. Was this in the context of increased rainfal...

Re: 2019 BC Classic

Not sure there's a way to find out, unfortunately. A number of video clips were circulating on twitter even before the videos were taken down, so I'll try to cross-reference them later. I wonder if the trainer had doubts but thought they were unfounded once the vets cleared him. I wonder how the exe...

Re: 2019 BC Classic

Well to make things weirder, it appears every single video of Mongolian Groom was taken down and reposted on November 3rd, not just the BC ones. I could only find them by specifically searching for him ( https://www.xbtv.com/?s=mongolian+groom ). I haven't watched all of them yet but the work his tr...

Re: 2019 BC Classic

I have absolutely no idea why, in situations like this, people conflate the two and interpret any suggestion towards improvement as a personal attack on the sport. i really don't understand how anyone who is a logical thinker can conflate the 2 either. Don't know what else to say. I can't imagine h...

Re: Breeders Cup Discussion?

Wow, has Shug ever said anything like this? From https://www.drf.com/news/mixed-emotions-wake-bc-classic?type= McGaughey said he thought Santa Anita “did a terrible job” with the track surface. “They want to make it like a beach. It doesn’t work,” he said. “The best horse won the race. The second ho...

Re: 2019 BC Classic

I don't have to energy to go through all this again. So I'll just sum it up like this: There is a difference between people who believe the sport is intrinsically baseless and cruel (an extremist position that literally nobody on this forum endorses) and people who believe that the sport in its curr...
