Re: Kentucky Derby Top 5

IMO, it is annual handicapping logic to underestimate the Wood Memorial. This isn't 1977. If those Wood horses beat me I'm willing to watch it and apply the same toss angle next year. In particular I love it when Irish War Cry was hyped out of the Wood two years ago. He was on top of my matchup agai...

Re: Kentucky Derby Top 5

Omaha Beach looks the part. Hard to envision him running a poor race. Meanwhile, he has already lost 4 times. I have a difficult time setting that aside. I don't see how Mike Smith can ignore it. No matter how impressive Omaha Beach looks physically, other than the maiden win he turns everything int...

Re: Arkansas Derby G1 Million Dollars

It doesn't have to be a 20 horse field to load in multiple waves regarding of post position. That was ridiculous. You're just asking for trouble with young 3 year olds out there. Maybe I'm just accustomed to the way Gulfstream does it now. Improbable never would have had to wait that long. Mike Smit...

Re: Kentucky Derby Top 5

Yeah I miss Kennedy's list, with all the variables and sound reasoning. Game Winner reminds me of Bates Motel. I'm not sure if that is a great comparison but it's the one that jumped out at me. I always thought Bates Motel was a tad overrated. More relentless than brilliant. He could be beaten by su...

I was amazed when I saw the date of the OP. Well done. That might be some type of record for first call around here, if Roadster wins the Derby

Re: The Florida Derby

I like Maximum Security, he's my second choice, maybe my third depending how the Ark. Derby turns out. But I hope he's no one else's second choice or top choice or third choice. I hope he's not even 12-1, more like 20-1. Isn't that what you hope for when you like a horse? I don't like the Dubai win...

Re: Santa Anita Derby

Very quick agile horse. When he made that sudden burst in midstretch I was trying to think who he reminded me of. The names that came to mind were Bold Forbes, Sunday Silence and Afleet Alex. That's based on style and athleticism, not necessarily ability. Game effort indeed by Game Winner. Kind of l...

Re: The Florida Derby

It's really a shame that he drew the rail in the Florida Derby. I think Mott and company were committed to making him rate, but it didn't work out well with the draw at all. Most horses would have been very unhappy with that trip, and although he didn't show a lot of punch in the stretch this time,...

Re: The Florida Derby

I'm not sure about the plans for Hidden Scroll but seemingly he could be one of the most well known and dangerous so-called new shooters that the Preakness has seen in years.

Stylistic fit

Re: The Florida Derby

I just watched the NBCSN coverage. Moss and Bailey were emphasizing the same point that I mentioned earlier...the absurdity of strangling Hidden Scroll out of the gate after he broke in fine shape. Ridiculous overreaction to the prior race. I couldn't believe they not only didn't focus on Bodexpress...

Re: The Florida Derby

Somebody mentioned the late starts at this track. Believe me, it is a well known trend and has become a local joke. A guy today told me he is there every day and it is amazing how Gulfstream is desperate to squeeze every dollar. The late starts are bad enough on a typical race day but on major race ...

Re: The Florida Derby

I just got back from the race and a post race party. My impression all day was the lack of buzz. The crowd was hardly the typical Florida Derby mob, where it's difficult to move around. It was more like a Fountain of Youth day, plus about 20% extra. I was shocked when I drove up prior to the 8th rac...

Re: 2019 Three-Year-Olds

I was a teenager in Miami during Affirmed and Alydar. An old time sportswriter named Luther Evans was covering horse racing for the Miami Herald and hosting a weekly 90 minute sports talk show on WKAT. Alydar was thriving in Florida that winter. Evans thought he would win the Derby. The consensus lo...

Re: Baffert's Most Talented Trainee

Early excellence is true excellence and absolute excellence. If they ever ran that all-time dream race the horses who dominated the Triple Crown would also dominate the race, as all the late blooming stiffs ran up the track, as deserved. I always have to laugh at all the rationalizations to exclude ...

Re: 2019 Pegasus World Cup

Tremendous week for thoroughbred racing. Accelerate can now go off to the obscurity he deserves, instead of forever being remembered as the late blooming stiff who was disgracefully and ignorantly allowed Horse of the Year over a young phenom. Early excellence is absolute excellence and extreme exce...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Congratulations on the sport for getting this correct. It was the single greatest litmus test in the 50 years I have followed this sport. In fact, there would have been little reason to continue to follow thoroughbred racing if this decision had been butchered. That's the way I looked at it. It woul...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

There is no good argument for Accelerate. He will be forgotten as soon as his career ends. Only horse racing could be dense enough to pretend this is any type of debate at all. It reminds me of football fans who ignore the big picture and change opinion of every player and team every week. I remembe...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

I would vote for Justify and if he doesn't receive it the award should be replaced by a jack o lantern this year. Give me a break. Nobody knows Accelerate exists. I returned home from a lengthy trip and didn't watch the Breeders Cup races until today (Sunday). I didn't know any of the winners before...

Deflated. Absence of Hofburg removes at least half the interest I had. I bet on him on premises when he broke his maiden on Fountain of Youth day.

Since that point the Travers always looked like the best chance for a major breakthrough
