Re: Saratoga 2019
I toured it one morning and was impressed with both the architecture and interior finishes. Quite the alternative from the pre-historic state of the main grandstand. One concern I had was efficiency of betting, as it seemed to lack SAM terminals and spots for tellers. Any issues getting your wagers...

Re: Saratoga 2019
Rock and roll, Rick. Racing is alive and well at the Spa, that's for sure. I echo the sentiment on the heat wave situation and I also agree on the new schedule. The price hike was one reason I got a picnic table this year. We did the 4 star Dave this year. I walk out to watch the races, unless it i...

Re: Saratoga 2019
I have been up here for much of the meet this year, so I will make a few comments from my personal perspective. The Saturday cancelation was a good call. The humidity is what may have killed a horse or two. I went on Sunday, IMO that should have been canceled as well. There are a ton of scratches ev...

Re: Santa Anita 2019
I don't follow racing like I used to, but it is the TC season, and Finger Lakes is open, so I want to add my 2 cents as someone who was around in the pre Lasix days. It wasn't pretty, especially on hot summer days. At a low end track like FL, many horses were here because they were bleeders. Trainer...

Re: Santa Anita 2019
for those of us who remember the pre Lasix days, this will be difficult at best, especially in hot weather. it will mean some horses can only run a very limited schedule, and some wont be able to run at all. in any case, it will hurt field size, something they can ill afford.......

I have to remind myself that you are no longer that horse cray kid. I think by now you have torn up enough tickets to be considered a veteran.Somnambulist wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 10:34 pmThere just aren't many races that I have witnessed the rise and fall of in my life. After 20 years of following this game am I finally a veteran?

Re: What if we had a National Racing Czar?
It is post time and the horses are a quarter miles from the gate, in Florida make that a half mile. The serious betting has just begun, the 4-1 odds you thought you were getting just dropped to even money. Maybe 5 minutes after post time they load. Horses go off and half way through the race you se...

Re: 2019 Graded Stakes
If race tracks would establish some solid criteria for entry into Grade 1 races, they would be naturally reduced to realistic levels. But fans hate 3 or 4 horse fields. So they round them out with horses off minor stakes, or even allowance wins. When you cheapen your criteria, you cheapen the sport.

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY
I argued this earlier in the thread, a few weeks ago. There are ample opportunities for connections to select where and when a horse runs to maximilze his Gr1 win chances. That flexibility doesn't exist for a Triple Crown, and thus it will always be the most difficult of challenges. A curse and a b...

"There’s no timetable you can employ at will. The Triple Crown dates are set in stone, three races in a five weeks, period. You can’t pick and choose." Bob Baffert makes a point. You can't pick and choose. [snip] I argued this earlier in the thread, a few weeks ago. There are ample opportunities fo...

And I still maintain that he would not have won any recent Preaknesses with that performance. The Belmont and Derby are substantially more arguable; I certainly think he would have won all or most of the second-tier Belmonts (i.e. years besides 2015, 2007, and 2005) with that same trip. Probably a ...

Re: Saratoga Good Idea!?
I hope this is a one year exception to allow the hockey rink to be built. While Mondays are quiet, it is the one day of the week that allows leisurely activities like multiple trips to the paddock, or a trip to the rail to watch a race.
