This week the first set of nominations and weights were announced for the 2018 Melbourne Cup to be held on November 6th (aka the first Tuesday of November). A total of 183 horses have been nominated including 50 "internationals" from England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany & Japan.

As ever the bookmakers have been quick to put up a "all in" market the official Aus Tab is as follows:
Kings Will Dream (Darren Weir) $10
Magic Circle (Ian Williams) $13
Torcedor (Andreas Wohler) $13
Cross Counter (Charlie Appleby) $15
Hamada (Charlie Appleby) $17
Withhold (Roger Charlton) $17
All Others $26+
Fascinating the hold the internationals have isn't it?!

One of the most frustrating things that could possibly happen on a long haul flight with animals aboard: A plane carrying 19 horses from the UK to the Melbourne spring carnival in Australia has had a FOURTEEN hour delay in Sharjah UAE due to a cracked windscreen.

These horses are Cliffs Of Moher (Aidan O’Brien), Fleet Review (Aidan O’Brien), Intelligence Cross (Aidan O’Brien), Spirit of Valor (Aidan O’Brien), Yucatan (Aidan O’Brien), Duretto (Andrew Balding), Danon Distance (Anthony Freedman), Red Verdon (Ed Dunlop), Withhold (Roger Charlton), Dal Harrald (Ciaron Maher and David Eustace), Pharrell (Ciaron Maher and David Eustace), Langley (Darren Weir), Casterton (Chris Waller), Count Octave (Chris Waller), Finche (Chris Waller), Shraaoh (Chris Waller), Gustavus Vassa (Team Hayes), Marathon Man (Mike Moroney), Sound Check (Mike Moroney)

The horses have remained on the plane during this time and been carefully monitored by vets and grooms and have all been eating and drinking well.

The UK horses delayed by the plane malfunction have arrived safely in Melbourne after a marathon 60+ hour journey!

The horses have suffered no ill effects according to the head veterinarian who travelled with them Dr Des Leadon adding “The horses were absolute heroes and all accepted the challenges they faced without batting an eyelid. They were looked after every step of the way by a highly experienced and professional team of grooms, so were in very safe hands.

“The air quality and hygiene levels on the plane were kept to an excellent standard throughout their journey, and I would like to thank all parties for the professionalism and consideration shown to the horses at all times.”

The horses have now entered the Melbourne quarantine center at Werribee racecourse (closed for a few months for this purpose) and will be monitored closely by teams of vets over the next few days
