I wonder if the "pop" he remembered hearing was his own neck vertebra fracturing; at the instant of nerve impingement it's possible that the sequence of messages from the senses going back to the brain get a bit jumbled in recollection.
That was my first thought, also. A post accident way of trying to make sense of what happened.

2018 death reports on file for:

Catboat (dam of It's Tricky)
Country Star
Honey Ryder
Indian Spell (SW, o/o Proud Spell, dam of Dak Attack)
Ponche de Leona (dam of Mucho Macho Man)
Rainbow View
Street Fancy
I'm seeing this almost a month later but wow Honey Ryder... I remember her from when I had bought the Breeders' Cup video game and watched the included races which is where I fell in love with Ouija Board.
Indian Spell was only 8... I know she had a no foal report in 2017... did she pass from foaling complications :( ?
And Ponche de Leona... no words needed there although doubly shocking to see her American Pharoah yearling sold for 80 000$
Not to mention Catboat and Country Star as well as Street Fancy...

Regarding Roundup, the World Health Organization recognises it officially as a known carcinogen in animals, and a probable carcinogen in humans. It should have no business at a race track...
A filly named Ruffian...

Eine Stute namens Danedream...

Une pouliche se nommant Trêve...

Kincsem nevű kanca...

And a Queen named Beholder

I saw Rainbow View with her newborn foal at just days old last year at Stone farm. So sad to only hear she passed one year later.

I didn't expect to see her at Stone, not realizing her owner boards his mares there. A nice treat however!

Sending condolences to the connections of 5-time G1 winner WITH ANTICIPATION, who died in July at 23, according to a @DRFGrening article about Wednesday's feature: the With Anticipation.

This fan favorite was the very popular winner of the 2002 Sword Dancer here at age 7....

Correction: With Anticipation lived out his life in comfort at owner George Strawbridge's Pennsylvania farm.

With Anticipation was SO exciting to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbSh2NsMTnE

He was 23, it could have been old age. But there was no article about it.
