Lovely Finish, who was badly burned along with her trainer Joe Herrick in the San Luis Rey fires, is now training at Del Mar Race Track. Joe said she’s happy to be back in training! Thank you to our donors who contributed to After the Finish Line to help Lovely Finish and other horses injured in the fires.

Martine Bellocq to receive Pincay Award in August

DEL MAR, Calif. - Martine Bellocq, the trainer who was badly injured when saving horses during the tragic fire at San Luis Rey Downs last December, has been selected as this year's winner of the Laffit Pincay Jr. Award, given annually to those who have served the sport “with integrity, extraordinary dedication, determination and distinction.”

Bellocq will be presented the award on Aug. 18, the day of the Pacific Classic at Del Mar. It will be her first public appearance since the fire.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

This paragraph is heartbreaking to me and it makes me hate people just a little bit more:
"Among the many things, no doubt, that Habell would like to forget are the messages and telephone calls fielded through the San Luis Rey office in the aftermath of the fire – anonymous, face-less and vitriolic voices blaming them for the fatalities. “We even had death threats called in to us,” said Habell."

People are incredibly disgusting sometimes. Of course Habell struggles a bit with guilt, very normal for survivors in a leadership position following such tragedy. Nobody needs that s**t.

Jeremy Balan worked well into the night on that chaotic day of the fire, and for days afterward, to keep us across all parts of the country updated on the fate of the horses and people we knew and loved that were unaccounted for. Below is his story today.

A few of us spent the day out at our trainer's farm just lovin' on our feisty race mare and sweet natured yearling filly, and watching them and their friends run and play in their paddocks...felt appropriate.

Talk about full circle. Scathing, the first horse to win after the San Luis Rey fire, just won at Los Alamitos at odds of 20-1, a year and a day after the fire.
