So good to see him! He really looks great. Dr. Chuck McCauley and his staff at LSU have done a wonderful job taking care of the big boy. Still has a way to go but going in the right direction.

A lot of folks inquiring about him, but I haven't seen any official announcements yet. Hope he's okay.

The NYRA database just lists it as a racing injury, for what that is worth.

Thanks for that bit of info on Fayeq. They've not shared much but glad to not be reading worse. Fingers crossed.

Looks like he's gained a little weight too. :) From Facebook:

Great picture of The Player outside for the first time since being at LSU. I just love how he has fought to do this. Dr. McCauley said that he is doing so much better and cast sores are healing and he is walking better. He is very happy with him and his continued improvement. Angus favorite colors are purple and gold. GEAUX TIGERS!!

The cast looks a little the worse for wear. I wonder if he occasionally chews on it like a dog.

NYRA database now shows Fayeq as "Fx cannon-surgery-to be retired".

Weekly Update:
The Player is still hanging out in LSU’s Tiger Country of Baton Rouge LA. Dr. McCauley did change antibiotics on him this week and hoping for a bit more improvement as he thought maybe the one antibiotic was not total kicking the infection. I just talked with Dr. McCauley and he told me The Player was walking much better than last week which may be due to the new antibiotics. He grazed him this morning and said he loved getting out. We will post pictures when I get some and as always we appreciate everyone’s concern, support, prayers and well wishes. I read them all!

I do think about this guy everyday and I hope he kicks the hell out of this infection and gets home with his people sooner than soon. Gotta be very hard on them in the meantime.

Update: While Dr. McCauley says The Player is healing, he felt that he should be doing better at this point. So yesterday he took X-rays(He takes X-rays weekly)which finally showed a screw that had partially broken. He removed the partial screw this morning and he is hoping that is the source of infection and the cause for some discomfort. Still doing well otherwise and his attitude is great.

The Player allowed my apprentice to shoe his support leg in the stall, laying down & wide awake. No drugs. Just a vet student petting his neck. Once the shoe & pad were nailed on he stood up to allow J.W. To finish the foot.
From The Player Facebook page. I really, really hope he beats this. What a character.

I have seen lots of amazing horses in my long career but not as amazing as this horse. He is a Thoroughbred stallion by the name of “The Player”. He is in the process of having his left ankle fused because of injury. Now I have done more than my share of horses laying down but they were knocked out on a operating table. The Player allowed my apprentice to shoe his support leg in the stall, laying down & wide awake. No drugs. Just a vet student petting his neck. Once the shoe & pad were nailed on he stood up to allow J.W. To finish the foot. I’m so proud of both the horse & my apprentice, J.W. Perez. Job well done!!

That is an amazing colt. Clearly, whoever raised & trained him did a great job of teaching him to trust humans, but I don't know if even the seemingly-saintly Zenyatta would have stayed put like that. :o
I really hope he completely recovers...and that tons of breeders bring him mares, hoping to get some of that intelligence and good temperament.

The highly-touted, 1/9 favorite in the 7th at Santa Anita, Amada Rafaela, was pulled up on the backstretch. :(

And I was already amazed by just the text version... seeing the photo is just. Unbelievable. What a horse!

The Santa Anita stewards say Amada Rafaela was euthanized after her injury during the seventh race.
