Santa Anita installs surveillance system with more than 1,000 cameras
ARCADIA, Calif. – Step into the Santa Anita stable area, and you will be watched.

The track announced on Thursday that it recently installed a security system with more than 1,000 cameras that will follow activity throughout the stables. The cameras have been installed in high-profile areas such as roads but also around stables and in individual shed rows to follow activity in each stable.

The system was put in place in September and is active around the clock, according to a statement released Thursday. The track opened its 23-day autumn meeting on Friday. The Breeders’ Cup championship races will be held at Santa Anita on Nov. 4-5.

Santa Anita faces a season of change that may make or break the 83-year-old track
ven by his own admission, Santa Anita's top executive realizes the six-month meet that starts Tuesday may be the most critical in the track's more than eight-decade history.

"We have to see the business turn around," said Tim Ritvo, who was sent to Arcadia from the East Coast to try to revitalize the underperforming track for its owner, the Stronach Group. "This is the time some of the implemented changes will kick in. There is no silver bullet. It's a grind process. We hope to see the trajectory in the right direction."

When Ritvo arrived in May, he promised changes but only after he had time to evaluate how the track was running and who was running it. He always targeted the signature Winter-Spring meeting as the time when fans would start to see the difference.

But, one obstacle that Ritvo did not anticipate is the formidable power of the TOC, which has the ability to block many initiatives related to racing and betting.

I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Well, he looks stout enough to carry the packages!
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

I just have to think that if the honoree had a vote, it'd be called the Bobby Frankel.

RACE 4 Robert J. Frankel S. (Grade III) POST TIME - 2:00 PM
Purse $100,000. For Fillies And Mares, Three-Years-Olds And Upward. One And One Eighth Miles. (Turf)

1 Penjade (FR) 4/F L I Ortiz, Jr. 122 C C Brown 5/2 N/A
2 Midnight Crossing (IRE) 4/F L B Blanc 120 R Baltas 8/1 N/A
3 Laseen (IRE) 6/M L V Espinoza 120 J M Cassidy 5/1 N/A
4 Elysea's World (IRE) 4/F L J Castellano 120 C C Brown 2/1 N/A
5 Gliding By (KY) 4/F L R Bejarano 120 R Baltas 6/1 N/A
6 Responsibleforlove (IRE) 4/F L J Talamo 122 N D Drysdale 3/1 N/A

Brown went to work as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Robert Frankel in 2002. Brown came to national attention at the time of the 2007 Breeders' Cup, when Frankel returned to California to attend to his sick dog and Brown stepped in to take his place, saddling Ginger Punch to a win in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
