Classic Wildcat ran today and it looks like it didn't go so well for him. I didn't see the race. Best of luck to Ben's Cat!

Classic Wildcat finished 9th beaten by 6 1/4 lengths, on June 23, 2017, at LAUREL PARK in Race 4.
Off odds: 7.70

Whoops - sorry about that. Didn't do my entries homework.

Yes, hopefully Ben's Cat has the sap flowing tomorrow. A mediocre performance will have folks climbing all over KL...

Ben's Cat finished 9th. Likely even King Leatherbury's thinking he's ready for a new career.

And Memphis Mobster won again today. His trainer also trained the very popular West Seattle Boy who didn't retire until age 13. This trainer seems to have an eye for sound old geldings who like to compete.

In case you haven't heard:
Ben's Cat retired from racing at age 11
In sports, nothing lasts forever, but for a number of years it seemed as if Ben’s Cat, the pride of Maryland, just might. Now 11, and a step or two slower than he used to be, King Leatherbury has made the decision to retire him.

Leatherbury bred and owns the Maryland-bred gelding. He trained him through seven seasons on the racetrack.
Ben's Cat will spend his retirement in Kentucky.

"There's a lady who comes to the Preakness every year, and she always tells me that when he is ready to retire that she'd love to have him," Leatherbury said. "I called her last night and said, 'This is the call you've been waiting for.' "

14yo g Box Top, who for the last 3 years prefers to race but once a season, is entered in Race 1 at Millarville this Saturday (7/1/17). He began his career at
Emerald Downs too far back to remember, but still has a little fire in the belly. Good luck to this War Horse - I believe he is the oldest thoroughbred currently still at work.

Box Top (He's Tops - No Forgiveness, by Basket Weave), 61 - 9-11-9, $58,565.

That sweet hug photo of Royal F J and Carava may be a little misleading.
Britney Eurton interviewed Jack earlier today and RFJ was the main topic of discussion. Jack said he's 'tough' on the boys around the barn, and not always easy to train.
Carava said he had the horse when he was a yearling and they gelded him before he ever raced, because he was so 'tough.'
I'm going to take that to mean he was unruly and bitey? :P
And he hasn't mellowed as he's gotten older...still a pretty aggressive horse, which Carava said may be why he has stayed competitive after so many races. Also said he takes care of himself, putting in supreme efforts just every once in a while.
He does like visitors and is always looking for his peppermints.
Sounds like he may be tough enough to make it to retirement, but I wonder if he has the temperament to be a pony horse.

Gosh, I watched that same interview and came away with a very different understanding of the conversation. He said he was a horse who tries but doesn't overdo it, and rewards them for their efforts. I love those kind of geldings because they do give themselves the chance to have long successful careers. Jack's claimed him back twice and compared him to a pet dog who's been in his care a long time, since he was a yearling. Brittney pressed him to talk about his quirks and that's when he said he's a tough horse to train (was a tough horse to break too) and a little aggressive and tough on the boys. He said Royal F J loves getting spoiled and they keep him close to the office. I detected a lot of fondness for the horse in the conversation; maybe because I can relate to having a tough old gelding who was very similar. That guy didn't really mellow until he got into his retirement home, but I love him dearly then and now. Different perspective I guess.
