A cute little backstory on Caren, the Canadian 2016 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old filly.

Uniquely Canadian: Caren a true Canadian anti-hero
TORONTO, April 14 – She’s Canada’s Horse of the Year, but you can forget about the endearing stereotype of the hospitable Canuck when considering Caren.

When it comes to Canadian personality traits, Caren is more Wolverine than Jason Priestly.

“If you knew her, you wouldn’t like her,” laughs trainer Mike DePaulo. “She’s tough man, let me tell you. You need a Kevlar vest to go into her stall.”

The feisty filly has developed a reputation as a fighter both on and off the track.

“Our first memories of Caren are unbelievable,” says Caren’s co-breeder Arika Everatt-Meeuse. “She would chase us out of the stall when she was a baby. At first we thought it was funny. Once you get a hold of her she’s a happy, lovable, in-your-pocket type horse. When you pick her feet up she’s respectful, but if you didn’t have a hold of her she was deadly.”

Stellar Wind has always been a classy filly, but it's sure nice to see her win a big race outside California.

As for Caren - she is a witchy woman, I've seen her run once and she is tough.

The layoff was no problem for Lady Aurelia. From off the pace, spun wide into Keeneland's short stretch in the Giant's Causeway...and she still blew by the field to win by a couple lengths.
What a sprinter. Can't wait to see her return to Ascot.

Wow glad to hear that! Especially since every other runner in there was 4 years or older!

I wouldn't be surprised if she lost it going around the last turn. She was digging in so hard, leaning into the turn as she accelerated past horses, that there must have been a good bit of torque on that shoe. :P

ETA: Now, I hope that Lady Eli also wins, although she's facing a salty bunch in the Jenny Wiley.

It makes my heart swell to see the sparkling quality of the Turf Distaff division in the US right now. That Jenny Wiley field is only missing Tepin and Miss Temple City, it's practically a BC race.

ETA: Lady Eli is prancing beautifully in the post parade, it almost looks like a passage, perfect suspension and all

Heartbreaking defeat but wow, Dickinson ran her eyeballs out.
Disappointed in CAG here.

Well, I was rooting for Dickinson to come in 2nd. Wanted Lady Eli to win. Nice race for both. Godolphin/McLaughlin are on fire today.

It seemed like Lady Eli relaxed a bit when she got the lead. May have just opened the door for Dickenson. Great race by both mares.

That's what I saw, too. Either that, or she was just a tad short off the layoff. Good race by both mares.
