I wonder if the "pop" he remembered hearing was his own neck vertebra fracturing; at the instant of nerve impingement it's possible that the sequence of messages from the senses going back to the brain get a bit jumbled in recollection.
That was my first thought, also. A post accident way of trying to make sense of what happened.

2018 death reports on file for:

Catboat (dam of It's Tricky)
Country Star
Honey Ryder
Indian Spell (SW, o/o Proud Spell, dam of Dak Attack)
Ponche de Leona (dam of Mucho Macho Man)
Rainbow View
Street Fancy
I'm seeing this almost a month later but wow Honey Ryder... I remember her from when I had bought the Breeders' Cup video game and watched the included races which is where I fell in love with Ouija Board.
Indian Spell was only 8... I know she had a no foal report in 2017... did she pass from foaling complications :( ?
And Ponche de Leona... no words needed there although doubly shocking to see her American Pharoah yearling sold for 80 000$
Not to mention Catboat and Country Star as well as Street Fancy...

Regarding Roundup, the World Health Organization recognises it officially as a known carcinogen in animals, and a probable carcinogen in humans. It should have no business at a race track...

I saw Rainbow View with her newborn foal at just days old last year at Stone farm. So sad to only hear she passed one year later.

I didn't expect to see her at Stone, not realizing her owner boards his mares there. A nice treat however!

Sending condolences to the connections of 5-time G1 winner WITH ANTICIPATION, who died in July at 23, according to a @DRFGrening article about Wednesday's feature: the With Anticipation.

This fan favorite was the very popular winner of the 2002 Sword Dancer here at age 7....

He was 23, it could have been old age. But there was no article about it.

Hard Study was euthanized on 9/16 after breaking his right front sesamoids while training at Saratoga. He had won the Flat Out S. and Birdstone S. and finished 3rd in the G2 Brooklyn Invitational.

Business Expense was euthanized 9/13 after breaking his left hind cannon bone during a workout at Saratoga.

Cleo's Reign on 9/13 at Finger Lakes, fractured left front sesamoid(s), sent to Cornell Surgical efforts to repair injury unsuccessful

Quaff on 9/8 at Belmont, doesn't say specifics just removed from track during training hours and euthanisia was recommended following xrays and poor prognosis.

Northernstreetgal on 9/7 at Belmont, developed chronic septic tendon sheath infection to R hock, unresponsive to antibiotic treatment, subsequently euthanized

Royal Blessing on 9/4 at Saratoga, found dead in his stall, ileal rupture (I think they mean ileum which is part of the digestive tract)

Swift One on 8/30 at Finger Lakes, fractured left front sesamoid

Dammit...there are some nice horses in that list. I watched Hard Study run in all those races, and he was a stout, hard-trying son of Hard Spun.
I'm really sorry that hard-knocking 9yo Royal Blessing didn't get the retirement he deserved. :(

Oh, sad about Royal Blessing...a really nice horse and still entire. I remember rooting for him some years back hoping he'd get the GSWs to earn a spot at some stallion farm.

According to CHRB equine medical director Dr. Rick Arthur, the final necropsy report on Bobby Abu Dhabi has been completed, but there is an "ancillary report" pending, so technically it is still under investigation. He said not to read into that & the CHRB is just being thorough.

So I guess Victor wasn't off when he said he'd heard a crack.
And as much as it is comforting to know Bobby Abu Dhabi didn't suffer long, it's gutting to think that there might have already been a weakness in his fetlock that made him feel 'off' prior to the work, because it might've made this tragedy preventable...

Absolutely sickening. They do not give details about the foal but a weanling was shot and killed at Springhouse Farm in Kentucky. Springhouse Farm was a co-breeder of Brody's Cause.
