The speedy sprinter/miler Obviously has been retired.

Grade 1 winner Obviously retired at 9
ARCADIA, Calif. – Obviously, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita last November and eight other stakes in a six-year career, has been retired after being diagnosed with a bone bruise in a foreleg.
The injury was detected in recent weeks, according to trainer Phil D’Amato. A 9-year-old gelding, Obviously won 13 of 29 starts and earned $2,321,751 for owners Anthony Fanticola and Joe Scardino.
“It’s something he’s never had before,” D’Amato said. “If he was a young horse, you might give him time and go back to training. At his age, it’s best to let it heal on its own.
“If I gave him three months, he wouldn’t make it to the Breeders’ Cup. He’s done enough for us.”
Obviously will remain with D’Amato’s barn in the short term and may be trained to be a stable pony.

I loved watching Obviously run. He was one of those horses with tremendous speed, who made everyone else chase him. And you had to be really, really good to catch him.
I hope he has a long, happy retirement, and it would be cool to see him out on the track again...ponying some young upstart who will probably never be as fast as his elder escort. ;)

That's really unfortunate. No telling when the injury occurred, but I know the colt kept trying to win all the way to the wire. Being so brave probably made it worse. :(

Grade 1-Winning Sprinter A. P. Indian Retired
Two-time grade 1-winning sprinter A. P. Indian has been retired, trainer Arnaud Delacour announced July 31.

The announcement of the 7-year-old Indian Charlie gelding's retirement came two days after an ankle ailment forced him to be scratched out of the July 29 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

"He's always had some minor (ankle issues)," Delacour said. "It's getting a little bit difficult to manage right now. Even if the horse is technically sound, it would probably become performance limiting, so there is no other way.

Straight Fire retired to stand in California
Straight Fire, a multiple Grade 1-placed runner, has been retired from racing and will debut in 2018 at Legacy Ranch in Clements, Calif., for an advertised fee of $3,500.

The 3-year-old son of Dominus finished his career with one win in four career starts for earnings of $146,400. He raced for the partnership of Jim Rome’s Jungle Racing, LNJ Foxwoods, KMN Racing, J. Davenport, and Andrew Molasky, and he was trained by Keith Desormeaux.

Straight Fire broke his maiden in his second start at Del Mar, taking a 6 ½-furlong maiden special weight by 10 ½ lengths. He came back to finish second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, then third in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita before being given the rest of the 2016 season off at WinStar Farm in Kentucky. The colt never raced again.

I'm glad to read that. :D He has been a gutsy and honest runner for Midwest, but he's no longer a graded stakes performer. He deserves to head off for a happy retirement while he's still (hopefully?) sound.
He looks like he'd make a fine saddle horse, if he has the temperament for it.

Everyone Wants To Work With Del Mar’s Favorite ‘Neighbor’
You've probably heard of or know someone who has been referred to as a “salt of the earth” human being.

Meet Nextdoorneighbor, a “salt of the earth” Thoroughbred racehorse by the testimony of those who've crossed paths with the gelded Florida-bred son of Lido Palace who is still running and winning, lately here at Del Mar, at age eight.

“Everybody who ever rubbed him or rode him loves him,” said Mike Machowsky, the first of 10 trainers who have had the pleasure of Nextdoorneighbor in their barns over the years, starting in the fall of 2009, that Nextdoorneighbor has been campaigning through the mostly claiming level ranks.

Well earned! He would have needed to drop into claimers against anything but WA breds and I doubt anyone wanted to see that. The Rosses are good to their retirees. I know they don't own Stryker but I imagine they'll have a big say in what he does in retirement.

For sure it was time to stop for his sake. He'll always be remembered as a champion. It'd be great for us if they let him hang around the track every year like Wasserman. They tried other careers for Wasserman but he just likes the track life, and Jennifer rides him all around the grounds. But I agree that Stryker will be well cared for whatever they decide. I'm glad they're having a retirement ceremony for him on Sunday so he hears his fans cheer and dote on him one more time!
