Today was Emerald Down's season opener. That always brings me back to remembering Longacres, and some of the now old timers who raced there. Sadly, we lost one recently. But he certainly lived a long and happy life after he was taken in by these kind folks. I'm posting only a few of the 10 pictures posted. The rest are here:

It's a very sad day at RMR and a very tough one for me, Donna Keen. We had to say goodbye to one of the first horses to come in to our program. Yeah Me Do came to us in 2009 in very poor condition. You could see every bone in his body and his hooves were nearly sluffing off with abscesses around the coronet band. It took a long time, a little over a year for him to fully recover.

Yammi had been moving a little slow and lost his hearty appetite the last 2 weeks and this morning he stumbled many times behind. We called our lameness specialist and he found that Yammi had injured his back and was going to deteriorate quickly and eventually not be able to stand on his own. We made the decision to allow him to leave as he lived, proud and dignified.

I'm going to post lots of photos of him starting when he arrived and going throughout his years with us. At 35 and 2 months old, he was the oldest racing thoroughbred in the US. Run free now Yam. You will always be in our hearts, I'll never forget you.

Thanks for this update, Flanders. I hate to hear that infection set in but good that so far they have it under control. Hoping for the best in his long road to recovery.

The Pizza Man, Work All Week Take on Pony Duty
Midwest Thoroughbreds' 2015 Arlington Million (G1T) winner The Pizza Man and 2014 champion sprinter Work All Week returned to the barn of Roger Brueggemann on the Arlington International Racecourse backstretch last week for careers as stable ponies during training hours.

The Pizza Man became the only Illinois-bred to win the Million in 2015. He also captured four other graded stakes events in his 36-race career, including the Northern Dancer Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine in 2016. Following his third crack at the Million in 2017 he was retired from racing.

Work All Week took the Xpressbet Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita Park in 2014, one of five wins that led to his Eclipse Award as top sprinter. He retired in October of 2015 because of a stress fracture in his right knee, and after he recuperated from his injury, took up a new job as a stable pony for New York-based conditioner Danny Gargan.
