Cabrera suffers season-ending injury, Tigers lose to Twins

The Detroit Tigers lost much more than a game on Tuesday night.

Miguel Cabrera ruptured his left biceps tendon in the third inning of a 6-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins and will have season-ending surgery later this week.

"This is obviously a very sad day for Miggy and for the entire ballclub," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It is obviously a huge blow to the team, both on and off the field, but we will have to find a way to overcome it."

I was at the game, and it was not pretty. Just about the last thing this team needed this season.

Giants closer Strickland mad at a bad performance and being pulled out of the game takes on a wall in the clubhouse, wall wins, broken hand, out 6-8 weeks.

Just my opinion, but I don't think cases like this should be a full pay, preferably zero, but 50% would be reasonable.

Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna suspended 75 games

Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna was suspended without pay for 75 games on Friday for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy, the league announced.

Osuna, 23, has agreed not to appeal the suspension, which is retroactive to May 8 and extends through Aug. 4. He will wind up missing 89 days, which would cost him about $2.54 million of his $5.3 million salary.

Osuna was arrested by Toronto police and charged with assaulting a woman on May 8 and then placed on administrative leave. The league has been investigating the charges since.

Party-crashing Phillies aren't going anywhere

There was a DJ in the Washington Nationals pregame clubhouse.

Not clubhouse DJ Gio Gonzalez, but like, a real DJ. With a turntable and speakers and lights and everything. Because that's how Davey Martinez rolls.

"I just wanted to bring one in," said Washington's manager before his team's series opener against the division rival Philadelphia Phillies. "It is Friday."

Tim Tebow improving, but call-up to majors would be a stretch

There has been some buzz around Tim Tebow of late. After a slow start, he went 2-for-4 on Thursday, raising his average for Double-A Binghamton to .318 in June and .261/.335/.398 with five home runs on the season.

Cardinals fire manager Mike Matheny; bench coach Mike Shildt to serve in interim

The St. Louis Cardinals fired seventh-year manager Mike Matheny on Saturday night, a move that came shortly after an 8-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds dropped them to 47-46 on the season.

When Chase Utley was a high school senior, I handed him his yearbook at the Senior Picnic. I watched he and Milton Bradley--a class a head of Utley-- play quite a bit when they were in HS. When handing him his yearbook, I said, "You're quite a ballplayer Young Man." He thanked me in his stoic manner. That was around the time he was drafted in the 2nd Round by the Dodgers. His fielding was questionable, although he was an very good HS shortstop, his special ability was clearly as a hitter and he needed to learn to field so he smartly took a scholarship from UCLA and three year's later was drafted in the 1st round by the Phillies. Given my obvious effect on his life, I will be quite disappointed if he doesn't mention me in his HOF Induction speech. ;)

Baseball lightens up, goes deep at the Midsummer Classic

As Major League Baseball transitions to a new era marked by home runs, strikeouts and fewer balls than ever making contract with grass and dirt, the game's decision-makers are plunging ahead with a new mandate: package the home runs, strikeouts and 98 mph fastballs with technological innovation, and sell it in a way that will make for must-see viewing during "jewel" events.

Manny Machado blockbuster makes Dodgers the NL's team to beat

The All-Star Game featured a record 10 home runs, but the Manny Machado trade rumors that had hovered over two days of festivities turned into the biggest news of the night when reports during the game made an impending trade between the Orioles and Dodgers all but certain.

And the deal is actually happening: Machado, a fixture in Baltimore since 2012, when he reached the big leagues 34 days after turning 20 years old, is on his way to L.A. to become a member of the Dodgers, for whom he'll play out the rest of the 2018 season before taking his talents into free agency.
