After having tossed the idea around with some others on the board, I thought it might be an interesting idea to dedicate a
thread to the old timers still racing out there - the 9, 10 and up gang. A place to consolidate some information.

Most all of us have, or have had, a favorite old war horse that we have followed from time to time, and this can be a place to
discuss them - to list occasional race entries and results, to seek out those who become missing in action, and to hopefully see
them into healthy and happy retirements. Also, a place to keep an eye on those that end up in dangerous situations, and perhaps
find a way to help them through. I realize that we have the "older horses" thread, but that seems more geared to the well known
racers and not so much the "blue collar" class that deserve some attention as well.

The oldest racer in my VS is 15yo Star of Rome, truly a war horse at 136 - 15-20-28! Almost a quarter million in earnings to show
for it.

Who are some of your favorite old-timers?

Age doesn't quite make him a warhorse, but the mileage does.

Run Smart One, 2006 gelding by Smarty Jones o/o Literary Light by Ide. Beautiful little chestnut with a lot of bling and a huge heart. Trained and owned by Steve Budhoo, runs almost exclusively at Calder.

84-12-9-12, $140,350.

10yo Disco Indy, a hard knocking claimer who has hit the board in 37 of his 61 starts, begins his 2014 campaign
at Charlestown, in race 7 tonight. Always competative...

12yo Porfido, one time SoCal fixture, completed his 2013 campaign a few weeks ago at Turf Paradise, and will prepare for
his 2014 run. He ran 13 times in 2013 - and maybe it's time to retire. It's a long way from the San Juan Capistrano at SA, to a
10K starter stakes at TP. Bears watching...

The one I follow is only 8. So I know she really doesn't qualify for this thread... Its funny how I began following her though, someone posted back in the beginning of 2010 that they had a mystery horse in their Equibase stable. They didn't know why they added her or who she was. This got me following her. She ended 2010 with the Most Wins at 13. She isn't anywhere near as competitive as she was and I don't know if she is running again this year.

My current favorite is a mare named Cat Can Do, had her 80th start (and 12th of 2013) last October at Gulfstream, have not seen any works for 2014 though, hope she is getting a nice vacation.

WarBiscuit, I love the idea of this thread.

9yo Pay The Man (multiple stakes winner in Ohio) worked 4f in 50.40 (27th of 44 at the distance) at Tampa Bay on 1/5/14.

Pay The Man is a veteran of 69 starts with 26 wins, 11 seconds, and 8 thirds. Keeping my fingers crossed for the ol' gal this season.

Of the ones that have run somewhat recently these 3 are my favorites. Been following all 3 since their debuts:

In my VS I have;

Pimms O'Clock, 11 year old gelding.
Record: 65:16:13:13
Earnings - $263,264
He hasn't raced since last September though so he may have been retired? Either way I hope he is doing okay!

Also I have Who Slew Who, 11 year old gelding.
Record: 136:14:28:24
Earnings - $138,043

But he "Did Not Finish" at Camarero last January, so not sure of his fate but he is staying in my VS for the time being.

A bonafide traveling War Horse, 12yo Cat Man (Storm and a Half - Zcat) makes his 107th start at
Beulah on Monday (1/13/14) with a current record of 106 - 21-24-21 and earnings of $327,836. Still very
competitive and enthusiastic on the track - and lots of fans!

Also on the dance card at Beulah on the 13th, 11yo Devil His Due mare, Jezebel Jenny, unraced since mid 2012, makes a
come back. Not sure why she was off for a year and a half, but hope all is OK with her. Seems to consistently finish
mid-pack...

10yo War Mare, Sun City make her 107th start at Turf Paradise on Saturday (1/11/14), currently at 106 - 21-27-16. She raced
18 times in 2013!

Good luck to all of these troupers!

Cat Man finished 4th
Jezebel Jenny finished 6th
Sun City scratched

I follow Sun City too. She runs at Emerald Downs too, and I've won many bets on the grand old girl!

Another "war horse" I love is the now 10 year old gelding Swiss Ski. Still competitive after 77 starts, 21 wins, 12 seconds, 14 thirds for many different trainers. Eleven starts in 2013. He has earned $321,769.

Yes, Sun City is truly a gem. Funny you should bring up Swiss Ski - I just put him in my VS this morning! He's running at Turf Paradise
next Monday (1/13/14) in Race 4. Love these youngsters...

The oldest one that I consistently follow is Barbecue Eddie (MD) DK B/, G, foaled February 5, 2004 (Stormy Atlantic - The Green Owl, by Carson City).

He is 40-10-5-7, with earnings of $943,849. He started his career California with Brian Coriner but was purchased by Shadwell/Sheikh Hamdan and moving to Dubai several years ago.
He hasn't been too hot this season at Meydan, but he runs in around 6 races a year, gets the summers off, and won last year's Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 (Group 2).

From my VS

Box Top, 11yo Canadian ATM machine.
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Result ... registry=T

Hollywood Left, 11yo stallion currently at Mountaineer. Had 22 starts last year!
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Result ... registry=T

Lot a Smoke, 13yo mare also at Lethbridge. Horses on the Alberta circuit get the whole winter off, I think that's the secret to why so many horses there run well into their teenage years.
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Result ... registry=T

Be Bullish, NYRA horse. Only 8 but he's certainly deserving of "war horse" status. He had a great rivalry with another war horse, Dr. W (now retired). 73 starts, over $800k in earnings, still tries his heart out every time.
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Result ... registry=T

Marvillosa Marcos, 11yo gelding. One of the few horses who has moved up in class in his "golden years" - spend a good part of his career at Les Bois, moved to Assiniboia and is now doing quite well in starter stakes at Turf Paradise.
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Result ... registry=T

Missing Sefa, 12yo mare running the KY/IN/OH circuit. She's stayed remarkably consistent over the years.
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Result ... registry=T

Then there's the old stalwarts Ravalo, Cherokee Artist, Awakino Cat, Strike Impact and the mighty Vanquisher still running and winning at a high level.

Start 85 coming up (probably) on Jan 12. At Calder, #8, 4:00 pm ET, Cl5000; he has post position #1. Check it out if you get a chance -- he really is an attractive horse.

The good news is that Be Bullish just won a 6f AOC for state breds this last Sunday.
The bad news is that he is now owned/trained by Drawing Away Stables/Jacobsen.

Isn't he still intact? Winner of 21 races and over $600,000, sound through 105 starts, I can't help but wonder if he ought to be given a chance as a stallion...

105 starts and still sound? Breeders ought to give a horse like that a chance, and being an Alydar grandson isn't exactly shabby breeding...but they probably won't.
You know, 100 years ago, a stallion like that would have been prized as a cavalry remount stud...a fairly fast TB, proven at the races, and shown to be sturdy and strong. I will also presume that Hollywood' has a good mind, without vicious habits, or he wouldn't still be intact.

I don't follow him., but 9yo Take Down Two just won his 95th start in the AQU 5, Cl3500[0/u], at odds of 25-1. Joy in that barn today! And gives TDT more than $430K in earnings.
