Jerardi: Pennsylvania tracks hit the nail on the head with event days

Whenever anybody asks me about the state of horse racing, I tell them it is an event-driven sport without enough “events.” Whatever happens on the other 364 days, the Kentucky Derby remains incredibly popular. In fact, you could make a numbers-based argument that it may be more popular than it has ever been. I think that is also true of the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes when a Triple Crown is on the line.

Jerardi: A closer inspection of Pennsylvania Derby Day bias

As the Sept. 20 Pennsylvania Derby Day card was playing out, just about everybody was talking about the track bias that appeared to favor horses running on the rail. In the immediate aftermath, I was less sure there was a bias than most and decided to give it some time and then take a critical look at the data.

Noted marathoner Ever Rider (Rider Stripes) and Grade 3 veteran Easter Gift (Hard Spun) are among a field of nine entered in Tuesday's $75,000 Auld Lang Syne S. at Parx Racing. Winner of the Temperence Hill Invitational at Belmont and runner-up in the Greenwood Cup (G3) at Parx Racing, Ever Rider cuts back to one mile and 70 yards here after finishing fifth in the 1 1/4-mile Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2). An allowance winner at Belmont two back, Easter Gift exits a fifth in the Clark H. (G1) at Churchill Downs last month. The field also includes recent Swatara S. runner-up and third-placer Adirondack King (Lawyer Ron) and Yougotthagoinforu (Student Council), and the Grade 2-placed sophomore Classic Giacnroll (Giacomo). Later, Grade 3-placed Tenango (Lion Heart) and multiple allowance winner Bama Bound (Rock Hard Ten) will be among the favorites in the $75,000 Valley Forge S. over seven furlongs.

New Parx racing secretary Sam Elliott sees “untapped potential”

The definition of a “renaissance man” is a “person with many talents or areas of knowledge.” That could very well sum up Sam Elliott, who brings a wealth of experience gained from many different aspects of the horse racing industry to his new position as Director of Racing and racing secretary at Parx in Bensalem, Pa.

Undefeated Cyclogenisis (Stormy Atlantic) makes his three-year-old debut on Monday against 11 rivals in the $100,000 Tom Ridge S. at Presque Isle Downs. The George Weaver trainee hasn't been seen in competition since running his mark to a perfect two-for-two with a 5 3/4-length score in the Laurel Futurity on September 27. Prior to that, the gray colt took his maiden debut at Saratoga on August 18 by three lengths. Trevor McCarthy, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday, was aboard for the Laurel Futurity and stays aboard for the Tom Ridge. Cyclogenisis just returned to the worktab on April 6 at Palm Beach Downs in Florida and has posted four total works this season, including a 1:03 1/5 five-furlong move on May 4. Others entered in the six-furlong Tapeta contest include multiple stakes winner Control Stake (Discreetly Mine), who is 7-4-2-1 in his career; Charlie's Brother (With Distinction) and Fast Flying Rumor (West Acre), the respective one-two in Tampa Bay Downs' Sophomore S. on April 4; and synthetic track stakes winners Serious Talk (Forestry) and Duff (Candy Ride)..

Stallwalkin' Dude (City Place) returns off a 15-day break to head a field of nine runners in Saturday's $100,000 Donald LeVine Memorial H. going seven furlongs at Parx Racing. The David Jacobson-trained five-year-old put together a four-race win streak before seeing his skein snapped last out with a runner-up finish in the June 5 True North S. (G2) at Belmont Park. The bay gelding got the best of dual Grade 1 winner Dads Caps (Discreet Cat) by a neck in that contest, and keeps jockey Angel Cruz in the irons for this one. Others of note in the field include multiple stakes victor Service for Ten (Service Stripe) and Grade 2 hero Coup de Grace (Tapit), the respective second and fifth in the Maryland Sprint H. (G3) most recently in mid-May, as well as last out Carter H. (G1) third Dream Saturday (Any Given Saturday).
