I'm not surprised by that. The Derby was an exhausting race that probably left many potential Preakness entrants with cuts and abrasions from the mud, and bruises from horse-to-horse contact in the big field. That understandably could have many connections wanting to give their colts some time to to recover.
There are a few 'new shooters,' but IMHO this year hasn't provided that many talented colts who missed the Derby, but are ready for the Preakness.
And it's going to be another muddy track, so that may have caused some to decide to wait for another time to tackle Justify. :P

I wasn't expecting that many Derby horses to enter, but I'd have expected a couple more new shooters. I wouldn't have expected a 14 horse field but 10-11 has seemed to be the average in recent years.
Maybe they aren't ready for the Preakness, but there are a few talented 3 year olds that have been on the radar for some time that either weren't quite suited to the Derby, or quite good enough/ready for it, delayed by injury etc. (or maybe not even specifically on the Derby trail) that could've been interesting in here.
