Great move by horse and rider to avoid the filly who broke down in front of them. She retreated quickly into them and the fact this one moved out so quickly and still won off... nice, nice filly. RIP to Payntermaniac

Los Angeles seems to be getting flush with high-priced sports figures named LeBron.

Everyone knows about the main LeBron James, but out at Santa Anita is another one, an unraced 2-year-old colt named Lebron J with a pretty big upside.

And he’s not cheap, either, having been bought for $1.2 million at the Fasig-Tipton Midatlantic sale in May by Dubai-based Phoenix Thoroughbreds, the same group that owns the colt Gronkowski.

Phoenix Thoroughbred was founded by Amer Abdulaziz, a horse racing enthusiast. He also happens to be a huge James fan. His favorite team? The Lakers.

“We had the name reserved with the Jockey Club,” said Tom Ludt, a former Santa Anita executive who runs U.S. operations for Phoenix Thoroughbreds. “And then this 2-year-old comes along. He’s a really good looking, strong horse. Abdulaziz says, ‘I’m going to name him LeBron James,” although the name is actually Lebron J.

The horse was named right after he was bought and before James announced his decision to join the Lakers.

I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Brill, 2yof, 88 Beyer impressive debut Wed at Del Mar. Hollendorfer and owner Larry Best have country’s two “fastest” 2yos. Instagrand, 2yoc, recently earned 88 Beyer debut Los Al.

I saw Brill's race and she did look really good. Typical tall, dark, handsome MdO gal with a stride that looks to want more ground. 8-)

Baffert, according to an article on DRF, is really high on the Pioneerof the Nile filly Mother Mother, whom he scratched from Brill's race. She is also a half-sister to Kentucky Derby runner-up Commanding Curve and runs Sunday at Del Mar.

Also in the race is Tapwater from the Mandella barn whom I have also been hearing good things about. She's by Tapit out of a half-sister to Malibu Moon.

Looks like Stonestreet and Asmussen have a nice colt in Nitrous (Tapit - Speedinthruthecity/City Zip), as the grey colt just handily beat a nice MSW field in the 6th at Saratoga.

Very impressive win. Drayden hit her 4-5 times in the stretch which I didn’t think was needed, since she was already well out in front.

Mother Mother was much the best, and Tapwater was a clear second. I would not be surprised to see the runner-up break her maiden next out.
