Romans Duo May Have Edge In Wide-Open Sunland Derby

There is $800,000 and 85 Kentucky Derby points at stake Sunday when a field of 12 3-year-olds heads to the post at Sunland Park in New Mexico for the 1 1/8-mile Sunland Derby. There are no standouts in this field, and whoever emerges as the victor will not only have won their first graded stakes, but will have virtually guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup for the Kentucky Derby with the 50 points that goes to the winner.

Trainer Dale Romans appears to have the strongest hand with a pair of colts who have been knocking on the door in top stakes competition.

this was posted under 2018 point races and as I said on it this is not a very good field of 3 year old. Don't look for derby winner in this bunch of average 3 year old.      ;)

This is a way for horses who are below the top-tier to get points, to go to the Derby and run 10th or 16th.

I think no recall a horse named Mine That Bird who won a race at Sunland, came to the Derby ---most people wrote him off including me----so you never know

Haha. Sure. But..... I’d say that was an exception.

Don't forget Real Quiet's two races in New Mexico (Santa Fe) as a 2-year-old. Never know where a good horse might pop up.

Firing Line also did pretty well for himself in the Derby, and Endorsement would have been highly competitive had he not been injured. Last year produced an absolutely solid top 4: Hence, Conquest Mo Money, Hedge Fund, and Irap.

That being said, I don't see anyone particularly interesting going into this edition. Hopefully someone does something surprising.

Papa Mandella is in attendance, so let's give Peace a chance!
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

I have a serious crush on Dark Vader. Hoping for a good race from him.

Never seen the horse before. He looked very good yesterday. Push button type of a move in the backstretch!

Does this site have a moderator who can delete posts? Because we have been hit with several spams today, and I'd hate to think what sort of malware is waiting for the unwary who might click on one of those links.
