Looks like a one race at a time approach. I won’t believe he’s a Derby horse until he’s in the gate on May 5.

A horse who debuts in February ain't a Derby horse.

poor curlin.

edit; i guess the gap from street sense to him was bigger than i remember, chart says like ~7, ~8 lengths. i thought it was a lot closer than that.

You made me want to go back and watch the 2007 Derby... but yeah Street Sense and Hard Spun were way ahead of the rest. Curlin did well to get up half a length for third.

yeah, i knew he was third but i thought it was a closer third. he debuted in feb as a 3 yr old too, which is why i went looking for the chart. that was a good buncha 3 yr olds.

and rags to riches did her thing - fitting, as i, a she-human, graduated high school that year :D

I know the Paulick article covered this, but John Cherwa's newsletter (email) includes some strong words...
This just in. Bob Baffert’s super-horse in waiting, Justify, is a surprise entrant in the fifth race on Sunday, a mile allowance for a purse of $56,000. Justify has been the talk of the backstretch with a 9 ½ length win in his debut and a couple of bullet workouts.

He was originally scheduled to run in the Sunland Derby in two weeks, but Baffert switched him to Sunday’s race. There are whispers that Justify may be in the class of American Pharaoh. A convincing win on Sunday, could point him to the Santa Anita Derby.

Another sign that Baffert is serious about this 3-year-old colt is that he has taken Drayden Van Dyke off the horse and put Mike Smith on it. Smith also rides McKinzie, the favorite in Saturday’s San Felipe.

Well, that looked easy.

He won with embarrassing ease. And with his ears pricked.
Not sure where he goes next, but IMHO Flameaway isn't going to be the only Scat Daddy in the Derby gate.

I don't know how to evaluate that with anything more than a shrug. Hope to see him in a Derby prep.

Holy Shamoly! What a horse. Puts me in mind of Dortmund with his size.

I hope he's not that big. He looks more balanced and athletic than Dortzilla did; I always thought Dort was too heavy on the forehand.

Wow! Beautiful beyond easy win for an absolutely gorgeous horse. Wonder what Bob and Mike thought? Can’t wait to see him in stakes company next. I hope and pray he stays sound. Kind of reminds me of another famous chestnut...

Dortmund also couldn't get 10f. Justify moves beautifully and I can see why people are excited about him, but I'm pretty sure the top two from yesterday would have looked amazing against this field as well. Not much to evaluate coming out of this race.

I'll guess he stays home and goes in the SA Derby against Bolt.
40 points for second should be enough for Kentucky, 100 points might make him the favorite!

Time was good for a sloppy track

Pedigree-wise, it looks like Justify has the Rasmussen factor. No comparison to Dort physically imo - Justify much more balanced and athletic. Big question now - which race will be next? I'm going with either the SA Derby or Arkansas Derby. I'm also guessing McKinzie ships out to avoid a pre-KD rematch with Bolt.

Despite what anyone else thinks, he still reminds me of Dortmund - chestnut, chrome, big. At least I didn't say the "S" word. :-)

Justify heading back to the barn. After the race, Mike Smith compared him to Easy Goer.

I was thinking a combination ofChrone and Sec. Of course has a lot to live up to that comparison, but the potential is sure there. Exciting! :D
