World Approval won the Tampa Bay, but two horses went down going into the last turn in tight quarters. They bounced up and were trotting off last I saw, so maybe they clipped heels or slipped on the grass? Not sure about the riders. :(

Marty McGee‏ @DRFMcGee
World Approval (1-5f, @ljlmvel) wins G3 Tampa Bay S. by about a length for @markecasse in a race marred by two fallen riders, Antonio Gallardo and Manny Cruz. Both jocks still down near quarter-pole. Both horses ran thru the wire and seem OK. 7-6-3-9. Will report back asap.

Just announced here @TampaBayDownsFL that both jockeys have escaped serious injury, with Cruz transported to a nearby hospital for observation and Gallardo returning to the jockeys' room after being shaken up. Good news all in all.

First stakes win since he was a 3 year old in 2015, and he beat American Pharoah in AP's maiden race in Aug 2014. Earnings are now more that $1 mil. Good to see Dan Hendricks get him back to his best form.

I thought Forge ran a courageous race running after the champ. More distance and he might have caught him.

Very satisfying to see Om to return to the winner's circle -- he's run some terrific races in defeat for almost two years now.

World Approval isn't going to Dubai after all.
Trainer Mark Casse told Marty McGee of the DRF on Monday that while World Approval came out of the race in good shape, he believes the distance of the Dubai Turf may be a bit too much for the gelding.
“The Dubai race is almost nine furlongs, which stretches us,” Casse said. “We've said all along a mile is his best play. You might be able to get away with it sometimes, but probably not when you're up against the best horses in the world like he would be in Dubai.”
“He's a champion, and we're going to take care of him.”
World Approval will now be pointed to the G1 Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland April 13, with a possible start in the March 10 G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita in between.

I've always found it strange that Dubai's World Cup card does not have a one-mile turf race. It's such a classic distance. :?

That's a bummer. I'm surprised that they think he won't get 9f around one turn on a track that's firm 90% of the time, but they know him best.

The 9f hasn't scared off too many top globetrotting milers. I agree it is a classic distance but maybe they wanted variety on the card without going full Breeder's Cup and expanding to 2 days 10+ races? The race started out as a 10f dirt race so maybe they are open to changing it again :P

The race started out as a 10f dirt race so maybe they are open to changing it again...

What race started out 'as a 10f dirt race?' :?
The Dubai World Cup started out at 10 furlongs on dirt, and (after a spell on synthetic) it's still a 10 furlong dirt race.
The race the World Approval connections are talking about is the Dubai Turf, which is shorter than the Sheema Classic. I just wondered why the Dubai Turf isn't a mile.

The Dubai Duty Free, aka the Dubai Turf, started out as a 1 1/4 mile race on dirt for the first 4 years of it's life. It was switched to a 9f turf contest in 2000.

I know what race the Dubai World Cup is and I know what race World Approval was being aimed at, the Dubai Turf.

Sorry...I did not know that about the Duty Free. I think I only began watching the Dubai Carnival when TVG started showing those races, which IIRC would have been around 1999 or 2000. Thanks for the information.

The 6th at Santa Anita is a pretty nice race for 4yo + up. The 1 1/16-mile AOC has horses like Hot Sean, Dalmore, Dressed in Hermes and Cat Burgler. I'd love to see CB, the favorite workmate for just about every stakes horse that has been in the Baffert barn for last couple of years, get a win here. :D

ETA: Cat Burgler was 2nd far behind a rather impressive Dalmore.
