RIP, Mourinho.

Avery Island questionable for Kentucky Derby
Top Kentucky Derby prospect Avery Island has been sidelined and will be shipped to Lexington, Kentucky tomorrow (Tuesday) to be further evaluated by Dr. Larry Bramlage at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital. He came back lame after working on Friday but initial x-rays ruled out any structural damage.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said: “It’s very disappointing for all of us here at Godolphin, and plans are on hold until we know more about the injury.

“He’s done something to himself. But we will wait until we hear from Dr. Bramlage before deciding the next move,” the trainer added.

Avery Island won his last start, the G3 Withers at Aqueduct, in convincing style to become one of the most popular prospects for the Kentucky Derby.

Looks like the connections of Greyvitos are pulling out all stops trying to get him to the Derby. 4th work in 17 days today?? Do I have that correct? Yeesh.

Either that, or they are on the fast track to retirement.

Greyvitos continues to progress on the comeback trail; up to six furlongs in his works. Went that distance in 1:15.60 this morning at @DelMarRacing. He has been off since suffering a knee chip when winning the Springboard Mile.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

'Why not' is an easy question to answer if you understand the risks of training race horses.

Yikes, quite a lot for a horse early in his third year. Hope he inherited the soundness from his dam's side.

Hovdey: Kitchingman has seen fire, rain, and injury
Greyvitos is not part of some racehorse witness protection program. It only seems that way.

From the moment he sparked interest last November while winning the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar, defeating a field that included Mourinho and Run Away, Greyvitos had the look of a colt with a future. What kind of future was unclear, but it figured to be an interesting ride.

Too interesting, as it turned out. Since the Hope, Greyvitos has been evacuated from the fires that swept through part of the San Luis Rey Downs Training Center, found temporary stabling at Del Mar, shipped to Remington Park in Oklahoma to win the $400,000 Springboard Mile, and then took the long way back to California by way of Kentucky.

No sooner had he returned to Del Mar than his trainer, Adam Kitchingman, detected heat in both knees. Small bone chips were surgically removed and the usual recovery period was prescribed. And then, as the tide rose in the fevered swamp of Kentucky Derby anticipation, Greyvitos was pretty much wiped from the grid.

Somebody forgot to tell Greyvitos, though. By February the colt was threatening his keepers with bodily harm if they didn’t loosen his leash. They complied. Since Feb. 26, the gray son of Malibu Moon has worked 3, 4, 5, and then 6 furlongs on Tuesday over a drying track at Del Mar, with exercise rider and head traveling lad Fernando Cano in the irons.

“He does whatever you want him to,” Cano said later Tuesday morning as a well-cooled Greyvitos tortured a mouth full of green alfalfa. “He’s our big horse.”

from DRF.....

McKinzie targeted for Santa Anita Derby, Justify to Arkansas Derby, per Baffert
He's known to call audibles, but "as of today," as trainer Bob Baffert put it this morning, McKinzie will remain at Santa Anita for the Santa Anita Derby on April 7 and Justify will head to Oaklawn Park for the Arkansas Derby on April 14.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Equibase has the details of his weekly workouts at Palm Meadows. His 4F time is improving. Compared to other horses working on those days he does seem to be falling back towards the middle of the group, but I have of course no idea how hard they're pushing him.
