Watchmaker: Nice to see Derby prospects racing in January

In a point in time when there seems to be a contest to see how infrequently good horses can race, it is a welcomed development that legitimate Kentucky Derby candidates are competing in these initial days of January, some four months out from the first leg of the Triple Crown.

GET STORMY's Storm Runner is now pointing to the $400k G2 Fountain of Youth! http://www.teamvalor.com/news/feb2018/stormrunner0204.pdf
In notching a spiffy 6 on the Ragozin Sheets by completing 8 1/2 furlongs in 1:42 2/5, Storm
Runner
ran himself right into the Kentucky Derby picture. That Ragozin figure is faster than any of Barry Irwin's previous Derby runners at this stage of the game, including Animal Kingdom, Captain Bodgit, Went the Day Well and The Deputy, who all scored major prep wins in March or April.

Storm Runner made such a big step forward that Romans and Irwin will have to keep a keen eye on how he recovers over the next few weeks. The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes on March 3 is the sensible next step as a chance to come back over the same track and distance as Sunday's race, but the connections will keep their options open in case he needs more time.

The door hasn't closed on Greyvitos' classic hopes just yet.

Mendelssohn's Road to the Derby is going to have to change course, as the terrible weather in Great Britain has caused the cancellation of the March 2 meeting at Dundalk in Ireland, where he was supposed to run in the Patton Stakes. Will he run in the rescheduled Patton on Mar. 9, or the Burradon Stakes Mar. 30 at Newcastle, or maybe the Mar. 30 UAE Derby? Stay tuned.
