Travis Stone, who has split the race-calling duties at Aqueduct the last three winters with John Imbriale, will not be returning to the New York Racing Association this winter.

Too bad. I like Imbriale a lot, but Stone is a very fine race caller.

Frank Mirahmadi has been named the new back-up announcer for Aqueduct.

Good for Frank. I hope taking on this new gig also means he has recovered from his health issues.

What does that say about the GGF gig that being the back-up announcer at Aqueduct in the winter is a better career move? GGF may have to choose between Alan Buchdahl (I've always liked him) or Mchorseracecall. I guess there is Matt Dinerman but he'd have to give up EMD and that might come with a fight as he's gathered a following up here.

Or maybe what it says is that the cost of living is higher in the Bay area than it is in NY? :P :D
If Golden Gate needs a new announcer, maybe there's some young, ambitious Aussie race caller wanting to move to California? :D

NYRA is the best racing product in the country, overall. I imagine the facetime alone is worth it.

What, no love for Angela Hermann?
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

As rhetorical as that question is, I'm sure, no. Her calls were like listening to Siri giving GPS directions.

I'd LOVE to see female race callers become as common and accepted as their male colleagues, but....every time I heard Angela call a race, I wished I were listening to someone else. Bless her heart, she was enthusiastic, but IMHO she does not have the voice for the job.

It could be an adroginous Martian. Just as long as there is reasonable accuracy without combining a cure for insomnia, I'm good.

Mirahmadi told the DRF that he was “overwhelmingly excited” to get the NYRA offer.

“This is one of the best opportunities there is in racing,” Mirahmadi said. “When NYRA calls there are two things to say, “yes, please, and thank you very much.”

C'mon Matt, where's your loyalty? We'll miss you, but a reluctant congratulations. Don't forget us <sniff>.

Golden Gate Press‏ @GGPublicity
Matt Dinerman (@3coltshandicap) will be the new announcer at @GGFracing as of the 26th of December, GGF management announced today. The position attracted strong, experienced candidates both nationally & internationally. Story to follow.

I figured that was coming since he's been the back-up announcer there and on screen handicapper. He's still a little rough around the edges but he's improved a lot. Good for him though, there are certainly worse things in life than working and living in the Bay Area most of the year.

Yeah, I think we all saw it coming. Matt learned a lot through his gig here and I'm happy for him to get the promotion. Besides announcing, he was a great ambassador for EMD. He'd be all over the backside in the mornings and on dark days and at every special event, talking to all and charming both people and horses, a genuinely nice young man. He brought new ideas like those Twitter live videos he did while actually calling a race, and he really appealed to the younger crowd that we know are so important to racing's future. I wish him much success and just hope we can find a similar 'jewel in the rough' to replace him.

Tom Harris Named Track Announcer
Emerald Downs Racetrack and Casino has announced Tom Harris as the track’s new full-time announcer.

Harris, who begins his duties Sunday, April 22, 2018, becomes only the third announcer in the track’s 21-year history. He succeeds Matt Dinerman, who was announced earlier this week as the new voice of Golden Gate Fields.

“Announcing horse races have been a lifelong passion for me, and the opportunity to announce at Emerald Downs is a dream come true,” Harris said. “I have enormous respect for the tradition of the sport in the Pacific Northwest, and the many fine horsemen and horsewomen in the area. I can’t wait to get started.”

Harris, a 55-year-old Dallas native, has extensive race-calling experience. Currently announcer at Portland Meadows, Harris also has announced races at Sam Houston Race Park, Retama Park, Playfair, Yakima Meadows, Zia Park, San Juan Downs, Albuquerque, Yellowstone Downs, Garden State Park and La Mesa Park. He worked last season for Emerald Downs in the broadcast and promotions departments, calling several races closing week.
