Still surprised they chose this spot for Dortmund's return.

Under the supervision of assistant trainer Alan Sherman Sept. 27, the son of Big Brown logged his final workout (three furlongs in :37 2/5) in preparation for the Awesome Again under jockey Gary Stevens.

"Soundness-wise, he's better than ever," Alan Sherman said. "I'm really happy with the way he's coming back. He needed a little time off, he got it, and he came back really good. It's never easy (returning from a layoff in a grade 1), but what are your options? I wish they had a mile race—maybe a prep for the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1)—but it is what it is. You've got to take what you get."

Stevens also acknowledged the challenges for Dortmund, but is optimistic he can overcome them. The Hall of Fame rider has been aboard Dortmund twice in his 16-race career, a 4 1/2-length victory in the 2015 Native Diver Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita and a half-length second to California Chrome in the 2016 San Diego Handicap (G2). He's also been in the irons for Dortmund's last three workouts.

"Good horses can do it," Stevens said of the comeback from retirement. "He hadn't had a rest for a long time, so it was probably a break he needed. He's training with a lot of enthusiasm. He was tough to pull up."

I did see that. I'd rather ship him for a softer spot, but I'm not a trainer.

I hope he surprises me.

FINALLY Mubtaahij makes an appearance! Guess he'd been working too well to keep out. Might need a race but he should be in a good spot to run past Cupid and Midnight Storm once they take each other out.

Slightly disappointing to me that we've gathered seven older horses for a G-1 at the end of September and the average number of starts made by this group in the last Year to Date is 3.

The Average number of starts by the entrants in the Penn Derby was 5.7.

It seems like an inordinate number of older horses this year have had abbreviated campaigns for whatever reason. Very few have tried/or were able to really put in a sold campaign.

Not certain that was the strongest edition of the Awesome Again we'll ever see, but I'm thrilled that Mubtaahij finally got his US G1!

Nice win by Mubtaahij, who has earned his spot in the Classic. Midnight Storm is such a gamer, but I wonder if his connections will stay on the dirt path and, if they do, will it be to the Classic or the Dirt Mile?
Cupid kind of disappointed; he just seemed to stop fighting in the stretch and also never changed (or was slow to change?) over to his right lead. Makes me wonder if whatever physical issues that have caused his long layoffs in the past have resurfaced. :? IMHO, we won't see him at Del Mar the first weekend of November.
