I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Patch, Lookin At Lee Head West Virginia Derby Field

Calumet Farm's homebred Patch, the popular classic-placed colt from the barn of trainer Todd Pletcher, heads up a field of 11 sophomore runners scheduled to meet in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby Aug. 5 at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort.

For those who care, Lezcano is named to ride Watch Me Whip. Lookin at Lee and Patch of course the favorites here, but those haven't fared well in the 3YO ranks.

Very happy to see this win for late developing son of Colonel John (who is now standing in South Korea). And congratulations to Jon Court, Jinks Fires, and A.J. Foyt, Jr. too. I hope it's game on for them from here on out.

Nothing helps turns back the hands of time like hanging around youngsters who, through their energy and ability, push a veteran to recapture some of their better moments.

At age 56 jockey Jon Court has been riding of late like a man with far fewer years on his birth certificate.

He brought a fistful of momentum with him to Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort Aug. 5, with three straight wins at Ellis Park the day before. Shortly after the gate popped for the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (G3) Saturday, he guided Colonelsdarktemper to the colt's best result to date and in the process gave himself and his kin a reminder of what they are still capable of.

Going against the family proved an unwise move in Mountaineer's most notable race, as Court steered Colonelsdarktemper—who is trained by his father-in-law Jinks Fires—to a gate-to-wire, one-length victory over Game Over, while race favorite Patch could do no better than fourth.
