Oceanside Stakes Will Get Del Mar Meet Rolling

In the time between races of Del Mar's opening day card July 19, fans and horsemen figure to give some thought to the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be contested at the seaside Southern California track this fall.

But front and center is the prestigious summer meet, which will feature 36 race dates from Wednesday through Labor Day, Sept. 4. Del Mar will offer Wednesday through Sunday racing throughout the meet, with a bonus Labor Day Monday.

I wonder if this will change anything significantly:

The meet will mark the debut of a modified main track, changes put in place under new director of track maintenance Dennis Moore. The changes aim to replicate the banking and grading of its sister track to the north, Santa Anita.

...mainly I'm wondering if I can adapt fast enough to attenuate any future gambling losses.

The part I don't understand is how can you make a surface identical to another like Santa Anita when you don't have an ocean seeping in underneath?

Forever and a day DelMar has been unique, I think it's where the term "horses for courses" must have originated. There were guys who handicapped according to the tide reports and they made sense out of picking their winners!

They can do all the identical banking they want, and they can use the same formula for dirt, but until such time they factor in the impact of the ocean, it ain't gonna be SantaAnita, imho.

Safe trip!
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

As long as they were able to do something about that sinkhole at about the 1/4 pole, I'm in. As for the rest of the trying to emulate Santa Anita stuff, it sounds good in theory, but probably won't prove out in practice. I think that the horses for courses phenomenon has as much to do with the time of year as it does the actual track. I've seen horses do really well at the old Oak Tree meeting and not nearly as well at Santa Anita proper and vice versa. There are two DMR specialists in tomorrow. Pedro Cerrano has won at both the summer and the fall meets and Preacher Roe popped at big prices at both of the last two summer meets, once on turf and the other on dirt. If Pedro can handle the turn, without falling over sideways...... ;) Good luck to all, no matter how banked the turns are, it's my favorite track.

And don't just ignore KarmaKing at a juicy 15-1

Two pick six carryovers into Thursday card at Del Mar

There are two six-figure carryovers into Thursday’s $2 pick six at Del Mar.

The main pick six pool has a two-day carryover of $271,496. There is a carryover of $126,816 in the single ticket jackpot pool, which is paid only if there is a single winning ticket.

The pool of new money in the pick six on Thursday could surpass $750,000.

The 6th race at Del mare today, a 6 1/2-furlong MC for fillies and mares, is interesting. Out of the field of ten, FIVE are either daughters of Candy Ride or by sons of Candy Ride.

Winner, Miss Remembered, by Misremembered, by Candy Ride.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

After Spectator's injury, this news does not surprise me.

Miller unhappy with Del Mar surface, plans to cut back on runners
DEL MAR, Calif. – Peter Miller has been the most active trainer in the first three weeks of Del Mar’s summer season, with 69 starters through Wednesday, the 16th day of the 36-day meeting.
Miller had 10 starters on the July 19 opening-day program. He is unlikely to have that many during the current five-day racing week, which goes through Sunday.
Expressing concern about the condition of the track and how his horses have performed, Miller said Wednesday he plans to cut back his number of runners.
“It’s too deep and too tiring,” he said. “The horses that run good over the track will run back.”

Further down in the article:
Other trainers have expressed similar sentiments. During training Wednesday, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert described the surface as “tiring.”
Jeff Mullins on Tuesday transferred his well-regarded 2-year-old Tatters to Riches to San Luis Rey Downs for a workout and then shipped the colt back to Del Mar the same day. Mullins said his stable has seen soft-tissue injuries this summer. He described the track as “deep and loose.”
