Big Orange finished a gallant second to Stradivarius today in the 2-mile G1 Goodwood Stakes.

Tomorrow will feature what should be fine edition of the 1-mile G1 Sussex Stakes, with another match-up of Ribchester and Churchill. Race goes at 10:35 AM Eastern/7:35 AM Pacific, if I've done my time adjustment correctly. ;)

Longshot Here Comes When Holds Off Favored Ribchester To Win Rain-Soaked Sussex Stakes
Here Comes When got the better of hot favorite Ribchester to run out a shock 20-1 winner of in the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. For his victory, the 7-year-old gelding by Danehill Dancer earned an automatic expenses-paid berth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile.

Having already won the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot this season, Richard Fahey's Ribchester was unsurprisingly a warm order to complete a Group One hat-trick, especially after the late withdrawal of dual 2000 Guineas winner Churchill.

The 8-13 favorite made much of the running in the deteriorating conditions, but William Buick was hard at work in the saddle with two furlongs to run and the Andrew Balding-trained Here Comes When battled his way to the front in the hands of champion jockey Jim Crowley.

Just when it looked as though Ribchester was fading, he rallied to the cause, but while he was making ground again at the finish, Here Comes When held on by a neck. Lightning Spear was third.

Winter Is Here.
Again. ;)
The powerful grey daughter of Galileo took the G1 Nassau Stakes, handling the ten furlongs, older mares and very testing ground.

I'm hoping that we get to see a match-up between her and Enable. Maybe in the Arc?

Is Caraveggio's race at Deauville being shown live anywhere?

Caravaggio's race was shown on Xpressbet live an hour ago. He did not run well.

He had a bad start, then was flat. Very disappointing.

He's had two lackluster races in a row now. I wonder if O'Brien will stop on him for a while?
Kind of puts a monkey wrench in their plans to send the Scat Daddy colt to Australia for that new, multi-million dollar sprint, The Everest. :? Normally, I'd think there might be the option of putting the colt up until next season, since he's only three, but I'm pretty sure Coolmore REALLY wants him working in the breeding shed next spring.

O'Brien said that he will be getting some time off, since they're not quite sure what has caused him to lose form so drastically.

Caravaggio Found to Be Sore
Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) is “very sore” after his slow starting sixth-place run in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville Sunday, connections reported Monday.

“Caravaggio was shod before the G1 July Cup and the day before he was just a little bit footy,” said O’Brien. “We changed the style of the shoe that he was wearing to one with a bit of rubber between the foot and the shoe itself. He was 100% when we put them on.”

Regarding Sunday’s performance, O’Brien said, “He just didn’t travel the way he can travel, and he ran again in those shoes on Sunday. Ryan [Moore] came back in and said he’s just not getting any traction. The rearing up in the stalls is something we can sort, but when he came out Ryan said he’s changing and not feeling comfortable. He pulled out very sore, so there is obviously an issue with the shoes that he is wearing. It’s a bit like a fella running in a sprint with spikes on him and the fella alongside running with slippers on. He is a front-wheel-drive horse–he works from the front. We think there is an issue there and especially when he was so sore.”
