The 2nd at Aqueduct today, a 1 1/8-mile MSW on the dirt, was full of well-bred and expensive two-year-olds. The winner was Biblical, a Pletcher-trained, $800,000, Tapit/Storm Dixie grey. But it was the 2nd-place horse, the $2 million, Pletcher-trained Marconi who caught my eye.
He's a son of Tapit and Ponche de Leona, which makes him a half to Mucho Macho Man. The tall grey missed the break and trailed the field by many lengths. But he had nine furlongs to work with and he caught the field, steadily passing horses. He went into the home turn really wide and wandered into the middle of the track, but still managed to gain on the leader. Only lost to Biblical, who had a good trip, by what looked like a couple of lengths.
Both Tapits look like they have promise, but I can understand why Todd debuted Marconi at nine furlongs. Once he gets past his wandering-all-over-the-place greenness, this is a colt who looks like he will relish classic distances.

I saw (for the 500th time) a TVG stallion add for Bodemeister, but this time it added the two year old Zulfikhar (x a Mineshaft mare) who won very impressively at Los Alamitos in early July and then disappeared. Boom! He's back on the worktab at Santa Anita. I suppose it was something like bucked shins?
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

He may need the advertising. He had some surprisingly rough results at Keeneland..... :? Lot of very low RNAs including a string of 7 through the ring.....all RNA. From $22,000-$160,000. Only the one made it above $100,000 that day.

That is surprising. Isn't the third crop usually a pullback? As I (I think) understand it, the book quality may be better for the first couple of years as breeders hope to get a hot sire with physically good foals before they have a chance to flop at the track, but the third crop is going to be "the thrill is gone" and if results aren't in the foals won't be desirable, so breeders hesitate to send the best mares. IIRC Candy Ride also had great early success followed by a few lean years before re-rallying.

I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

I thought it was a strange spot after the six furlong work on Wednesday.

He was very impressive at Del Mar and much the best. Chad Brown always has nice turf horses but I agree this one looks special.

Also nice to see Point of Entry get a nice juvenile in his first crop, especially since he himself didn't make any noise until he was an older horse.

Los Al: Vision leaves [sic] up to expectation
The first-time starter Vision ($5.40) closed impressively in the final furlong to win his debut in a maiden race at 5 1-2 furlongs in Thursday's sixth race.

Ridden by Mike Smith, Vision was fourth turning into the stretch and rallied toward the inside late to win by 1 1-4 lengths over 6-1 Shanghai Billy. Vision ran 5 1-2 furlongs in 1:04.79.

Trained by Bob Baffert for a partnership that includes China Horse Club International, SF Racing and WinStar Farm, Vision was purchased for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale in Florida in March.

Yeah, he seemed to be spinning his wheels on the far turn but that long Los Al stretch gave him a chance to get unwound and when Mike pointed him to the rail he really took off.
