Two-year-olds of 2017

The 2nd at Aqueduct today, a 1 1/8-mile MSW on the dirt, was full of well-bred and expensive two-year-olds. The winner was Biblical, a Pletcher-trained, $800,000, Tapit/Storm Dixie grey. But it was the 2nd-place horse, the $2 million, Pletcher-trained Marconi who caught my eye.
He's a son of Tapit and Ponche de Leona, which makes him a half to Mucho Macho Man. The tall grey missed the break and trailed the field by many lengths. But he had nine furlongs to work with and he caught the field, steadily passing horses. He went into the home turn really wide and wandered into the middle of the track, but still managed to gain on the leader. Only lost to Biblical, who had a good trip, by what looked like a couple of lengths.
Both Tapits look like they have promise, but I can understand why Todd debuted Marconi at nine furlongs. Once he gets past his wandering-all-over-the-place greenness, this is a colt who looks like he will relish classic distances.

I saw (for the 500th time) a TVG stallion add for Bodemeister, but this time it added the two year old Zulfikhar (x a Mineshaft mare) who won very impressively at Los Alamitos in early July and then disappeared. Boom! He's back on the worktab at Santa Anita. I suppose it was something like bucked shins?
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

He may need the advertising. He had some surprisingly rough results at Keeneland..... :? Lot of very low RNAs including a string of 7 through the ring.....all RNA. From $22,000-$160,000. Only the one made it above $100,000 that day.

That is surprising. Isn't the third crop usually a pullback? As I (I think) understand it, the book quality may be better for the first couple of years as breeders hope to get a hot sire with physically good foals before they have a chance to flop at the track, but the third crop is going to be "the thrill is gone" and if results aren't in the foals won't be desirable, so breeders hesitate to send the best mares. IIRC Candy Ride also had great early success followed by a few lean years before re-rallying.

I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.
