Santa Anita Cancels

Santa Anita Cancels

Postby stark » Sun Apr 23, 2017 8:36 pm

Santa Anita announced that there aren't enough horses to fill 8 races, so cancel Thursday racing this week!

Seems like a lot of finger pointing towards the failure of the Racing Secretary, Frank Stronach, the CHRB and Hollywood Park.
But nobody seems to be holding the horsemen accountable? Why is that?

With 2,000 stalls filled to capacity and overflow horses stabled down south at SanLuisReyDowns, are you kidding me that they couldn't muster up 60-70 ready to run equines?

I don't think it's any kind of walkout or boycott sponsored by AndyA.

I do think there's a lot of horsemen who don't like to risk their win percentages/ROI/public profile these days.

And next, equally confusing is the brouhaha where DelMar wants to limit a trainer to just 40 stalls, hmmm!
Consider me dazed and confused.

I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

This can't be good night matter how you look at it.

It's stuff like this, happening at what is supposed to be California's premier racetrack, that makes it hard to convince the newspapers and TV channels to keep horse racing on their menus. :(

It's not on their menus.
In Tampa, we have an active track, racing now. The track even advertises in the only active paper. No one can find a word about entries or results.
Maybe we'll get lucky and the paper will give us the Derby entries. They may even tell us who wins it.
I don't think they know who Arrogate is.

It's hard to make a 10-horse race go when all the horsemen are looking for a cozy four- or five-horse field to run in so the connections of every horse make a nice profit out of every race. Makes a mockery of the word "sport."

Thursday, huh? Maybe some of the connections made plans to watch the NFL Draft, rather than enter their horse for that day. I wouldn't totally discount it, especially now that Los Angeles hosts two teams in the Rams and Chargers. With the 3 hour time difference the draft begins at 5 PM Pacific.

I think we've got a bunch of trainers who have set up their family household budget based on collecting the day-rates, and purse money is just an added bonus. Take away the guaranteed money like golf or tennis pay for performance rules and see overflow fields fighting for purse money, hmmm!

That's okay. Socal will still get 8 of the next 10 Breeders Cups. Good at big days, not so much the day-to-days.

Top executive for Stronach Group is being sent to Santa Anita to revitalize track
http://www.latimes.com/sports/more/la-s ... story.html

After the 142nd running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, the Stronach Group’s top executive will leave his East Coast base and move to Arcadia to try to revitalize Santa Anita Park.

Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer of the Stronach Racing Group, is being sent west to help “implement best practices,” Sal Sinatra confirmed to The Times. Sinatra is the Maryland Jockey Club president and general manager.

Ritvo was unavailable for comment.

Ritvo is known as Frank Stronach’s fix-it guy, having helped transform racing at Gulfstream Park and successfully moving racing in Maryland to Laurel Park for most of the year. Pimlico runs only 12 days a year.

Technically, Ritvo has always had authority over Santa Anita as COO, but the historic track has operated almost on its own.

Ritvo will arrive in Southern California in a few days and take up residence in a house that adjoins the downhill turf course at Santa Anita.

Sinatra said Ritvo will be there “for an extended period of time.”

The move is said to be part of a restructuring, with one goal to have only one big-events team that can move from track to track. The Stronach Group owns Santa Anita, Gulfstream, Pimlico, Laurel, Golden Gate and Portland Meadows.

Santa Anita has struggled recently with attendance and a shortage of horses. The track canceled a late April card because of a lack of entries. The wet winter also has not helped the track.

It’s unclear whether this will change the duties or eliminate any of the current management team at Santa Anita.

thanks for posting that article Stark - found it interesting - and by the way..... I always thought it looked like there was a house/residence inside the track at santa anita - but was never sure exactly - my husband would say 'no its probably some maintenance building or something' - but it looks like a home to me - anyway, maybe that's the place Ritvo will be living in while staying out here (as mentioned in the story).
