I'm fairly impressed with her. I guess it remains to be seen but what doesn't in racing.

Hey Jerry, how does being 9/5 on the morning line for the Santa Anita Derby sound to you?
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

I mean, she hasn't really been trying all that hard. Last race was the closest someone got to her, and she was having a bit of a rough day, and still spurted away.

She could very well be, my initial comment wasn't really meant to be taken as having to be one or the other. We won't know just exactly how good she is until she faces stronger competition, is what I meant :)

Unique Bella, 6f in 1:11.20 Sunday Santa Anita. She runs next in Santa Anita Oaks on April 8.....

or might she take on a dwindling number of quality males in the SA Derby????

stark.... I would not be surprised if Bella ran in the SA Derby instead of the Oaks - and frankly, I could see ol baff entering Abel Tasmen in the SA Derby too.

Unique Bella worked six furlongs Sunday in 1:11.20, and will make her next start in the Santa Anita Oaks on April 8. There will be no Santa Anita Derby for the filly. “I haven’t had anyone chirping at me to run in the Santa Anita Derby except for people that have nothing to do with the horse,” trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said.

Like I said even if he knew Unique Bella could go 10f in 1:59 flat he wouldn't send her. She's a girl.

I don't know if he's dismissing UB's ability to win the Derby because she's a GIRL, so much as having the philosophy that it's not worth throwing a filly of her quality into that 20-horse madhouse of a race.
If the glory of winning the Derby isn't THE most important thing in your life - everything else be damned (including the horse's welfare?) - then the importance of running a filly in it drops pretty far down the list.
A colt winning the Derby has a greatly-increased value as a stallion. A filly has no such increase in value.
IMHO, Unique Bella already has enough black type (and the royal pedigree) to cement her value as a potential broodmare.
It may be possible that the big grey gal will take on the boys in some future race, but it's sure not going to be in the Derby. :P

He's stated publically before that he doesn't believe in females racing against makes, or something to that effect so I'm pretty sure it's just him.
