Mike Smith was on TVG's Keeneland desk this morning, while he was helping out with the PDJF Telethon, and he said that he would be riding UB in the Apple Blossom, which I think is this coming Friday. Can't wait. :D

'Bella was passed by Unbridled Mo in the stretch of the Apple Blossom, but UB was badly compromised by an awful start. I don't know if she was just off balance when the gate opened or slipped when she left the gate, but her hind legs looked like she was caught in a wide straddle a step out of the gate.
When she got back in gear, she was headstrong and passed the field on the outside, taking the lead entering the stretch. After all that work, IMHO she had less than her usual kick down the stretch.
She'll get 'em next time. ;)

That was purely bad luck, but perhaps she needs to learn to relax? She was so darn sharp! I still think she’s #1

"(Unique Bella) squatted in the gate. I was trying to stand her up. The next thing I knew, they opened the gates and she squatted back," said jockey Mike Smith. "She totally missed the break. I wish I could have stayed last. If I could have, I would have. She was very strong and very fresh. After she got left, she just wanted to catch up. I could have thrown her down, but I never had to do that, and I wasn't about to start. It was just unfortunate."

She squatted?!? Silly girl.
Still, relaxing might have helped...she hung on for 2nd, but Farrell was cooked.

For handicapping all future Unique Bella races, the reference for the Apple Blossom will be to draw a line thru it.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Not until I hear she’s done some gate work. She may be faster than the other horses but that doesn’t make her better than the other horses. Her career won’t be long enough, probably, to train the rankness out of her so she needs to not have any excuses to disregard the 115 lb., muscle bound passenger on her back.

Looked like she had to pee badly. Nothing that any gate work could fix, just bad timing.

Unique Bella rocks forward/back in the gate. As a commentator said, the gate is Unique Bella's kryptonite. . .

It’s not the first time she’s broke badly. Perhaps a catheter is in order.

That had me laughing for 5 straight minutes. Thank you.

I had no idea about her previous gate antics, it just looked like that to me when she was leaning backwards. Was wrong then!

Hollendorfer Causes Stir As He Nominates Unique Bella To Pacific Classic; Plans Not Solid Yet
Of the eight names on nomination forms for the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic secured by the Del Mar racing office as of Thursday morning there was one guaranteed to create a stir in fans and horsemen alike.
That name: Unique Bella, the Eclipse Award-winning 4-year-old filly trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, owned by Don Alberto Stable and earner of more than $1.2 million from nine wins in 12 career starts, most recently a half-length score in the Grade 1 $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes here on July 29.
“We're nominating and we'll take a look at the other nominations,” Hollendorfer said Thursday morning. Asked for a percentage estimate on the possibility of Unique Bella, Hollendorfer said: “Not at this time.”

I'm fairly sure that she won't end up running, unless there are a bunch of scratches from the present list of nominations. I love the big grey filly, but IMHO she might have a hard time beating some of the other nominees, like Accelerate, Catalina Cruiser or Pavel.

Sadler has said Accelerate and Catalina Cruiser won’t both go. My guess is Accelerate will go in the Pacific Classic and Catalina Cruiser will be nominated to the Woodward but end up running in the Stronach Stallion Stakes (formerly the Goodwood). As for Unique Bella, I agree, talented as she is, going 10f against males with speed is not in her best interest. Besides, it would make the rest of Mikey’s hair fall out having to decide between She, Dr. Dorr and Dabster.😉

I'm rather shocked that another filly didn't go with her.

A bit more...
A friend has some race fillies. He had a problem with one like that. He finally figured out that in her early training they would wait until she pee'd, because she showed no, err, restraint when ridden. She actually did win a couple of allowances, eventually. But gate crews always had to be warned about it.

From Privman@DRF this morning.

Unique Bella is nominated to the Pacific Classic next Saturday, which would be her first race at 1 1/4 miles and her first start against males. She also would be coming back three weeks after winning the Clement Hirsch at Del Mar. In her first work since the Hirsch, she went four furlongs in 51. 60 seconds Sunday morning at Del Mar.

Jerry Hollendorfer, her trainer, told me last week he doubted he'd run Unique Bella in the Pacific Classic, and there seemed little change in that approach after today's work.

"I'm leaning to run at Santa Anita," he said, referring to the Grade 1 Zenyatta in late September.

Asked if he'd even enter the Pacific Classic on Tuesday to take a look, Hollendorfer replied, "That's doubtful."
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.
