sometimes I think trainer John Sherriffs deserves his own thread.
much has been written about the Z babies along with others in his shed and how he get's 'em ready to run!
patient horseman is an understatement.
but this might be a new high/low benchmark

On Monday at Del Mar there's a first timer by the name of Kindred, owned by the Moss family.
listed at 12/1 on the morning line, the question on everybody's mind......will she need one?

Just imagine if she was your horse after paying $250,000 for the CandyRide filly and the discussions about a first start that must have gone on,
here's his workout regimen going into the race, all 32 of them.....

I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

^^^^^ All I can say is, Sigh.

BTW Flavien Prat won with three of his four mounts for Baffert, including a sharp MSW winner in Solomini, who was a second faster than St Patrick's Day.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Part of that delay may well have had to do with the Mosses splitting up and Kindred's ownership being undecided.

Another with a nice pedigree: By Curlin out of a half-sister to champion Midshipman and grade II winner Fast Cookie (herself the dam of Frosted).

Baffert had another sharp MSW winner today at Del Mar, an Exchange Rate filly named Alluring Star who I think they said sold for $850,000. She was ridden by. . . Joe Talamo.

When he dies, they may find "Nero" carved on Martin Garcia's heart!

The 2017 Saratoga meet took on special importance for the Gaudet family, (from left), Linda, Gabby, Lacey and Eddie.

Take notes they said. Record or write down all the stories he tells you. When people told me that as I was growing older, I never fully understood the weight behind it.

“He’s 75, he’s forgotten more than most people in this game will ever learn,” we’d say.

None of us thought that the joke of what he’d forgotten would turn to reality of what he can’t remember.

Tonight is a bad night. They’re growing more frequent. He doesn’t remember the home he made for his family that means so much to us, he doesn’t remember who we are most nights and the concept of a fork is learned each night. As I sit here, spoon-feeding him ice cream that, just a few weeks ago was what he looked forward to each night, I am reminded of the inevitable; it will only get worse.

When we (Mom and I, and even Gabby) ventured into this year, the goal of the Saratoga meet was to expand. Gain clientele and fresh horses and if we were lucky, hit the board with a few we’d take with us from Maryland. I don't think I understood the full weight behind it.

“We have to make it work. It’s now or never and I think the time is right,” I told my mom in the months approaching the start of the meet.

Mom doesn’t need or want this. She does this for us. She pushes the papers and the bills and does the tough part but the reality behind this extraordinary sport we play and to me at least, the grunt work is the easy part.

The days that start at 3:30 a.m. and go until 8 at night, the sick horses, the help not showing up … that’s the easy part. It’s the part that Dad never handled either that is the hard part. The hoping … that a check from an owner is in the mail and the looking for a “house horse” to get it done for the home team to pay the bills.

We see it growing up in the game, the men who are so successful and women behind them that are the glue. The ones who tick off the help because they expect more and the ones who make the tough phone calls. The ones who make sure the shipping box is packed and the licenses are in order, and that the papers, and coggins are in the van drivers hands.

We’re doing what’s right for him, keeping him at home when it’s hard for us, because this is where he belongs. He has given us a name that rings proud from coast to coast and I never get tired of people asking, when they truly care, “How’s Eddie?” I always say, “Thanks for asking,” because it’s comforting to know that no one has forgotten him. But how could they?

So as I tuck him into bed tonight, as he did for me so many nights, I can’t help but think…what will our “summer at Saratoga” mean for us?

CYPRESS, Calif. – Jimmy Barnes, the longtime assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, was being treated for a fractured pelvis on Sunday after being unseated from the stable pony earlier in the day.

“He stumbled,” Baffert said. “The pony lost his footing. He just went down. It was a freaky thing.”

It was not immediately known how long Barnes would be hospitalized.

Barnes has been an integral part of Baffert’s team for nearly two decades, often traveling around the nation – and to Dubai – with the stable’s leading horses. In 2015, he accompanied American Pharoah to Oaklawn Park for a win in the Arkansas Derby and was alongside the colt through a sweep of the Triple Crown.

Barnes, 58, has worked for Baffert since November 1998.

Broberg sends out wrong horse to win race
http://www.drf.com/news/broberg-sends-o ... e-win-race
“It was an absolutely embarrassing mistake,” he said. “All of us are ashamed of it and are working to put protocols in place where something like this can never happen again. I’ve already reached out to the owners, and I’m going to make it right with them as well. There really isn’t much more to say . . . I want to hide from now until the end of time, or when everyone forgets.”
I want to know how the track identifier missed this.

Wow. And one's a mare and the other a gelding. What a screw up.

This happened at Mahoning Valley a few years ago too, when a gelding won a filly/mare race. Iirc- the 2 were stabled next to each other and the groom got the wrong horse ready.

Jose Ortiz complaining of knee pain after Belmont spill
Jose Ortiz, the leading jockey in North America in purse money this year, was taken to a Long Island hospital to have his left knee examined after being involved in a spill in Wednesday’s ninth race at Belmont Park.

Ortiz was complaining of pain in his knee when he tried to flex it, according to a nurse at Belmont Park’s First-Aid department. Ortiz had his knee and ankle wrapped up as he was being wheeled on a gurney out of First Aid and to an ambulance. The ankle was swollen, but he was not complaining of pain, the nurse said.

Ortiz was aboard Submit, a 3-year-old filly trained by Christophe Clement making her fourth career start, this one in a maiden $40,000 claiming turf race.

In the stretch, Submit was making a belated run toward the leaders when she took a misstep, suffering a cannon bone fracture to her left foreleg. She was euthanized on track.

Angel Arroyo Celebrates 1,000th Victory

Jockey Angel Arroyo recorded his 1,000th career victory when 14-1 choice Pico Chick won the opener of the Sept. 28 card at Belmont Park.

Arroyo piloted Pico Chick to a come-from-behind win, edging out Honor Way by a nose in the six-furlong sprint on the main track to reach the personal milestone.

Jockey Clawson, after concussion, will no longer ride races

Only 15 months after it began, the jockey career of Katie Clawson has come to an end, at least temporarily, perhaps permanently.

Clawson, 20, said Friday she would no longer ride races and was resuming work as an exercise rider. Clawson said she had taken a job galloping horses for trainer Mike Maker.

I'm sorry to read this, as I thought she is a very talented rider. But I don't blame her for stepping back from riding races.
The reality is that riding racehorses, like so many other contact sports, comes with the risk of repeated concussions. With what we know now about CTE...and learning more all the time...even very young athletes can suffer the horrible, long-term consequences of head injuries. :(

Speaking of concussions....

Keeneland Initiates Concussion Protocol for Jockeys
Will require jockeys competing to complete a baseline concussion assessment.
Keeneland will require jockeys competing in the 2017 fall meet, which begins Oct. 6, to complete a baseline concussion assessment prior to being allowed to ride. Keeneland is among the first racetracks in the United States to establish concussion management and return to participation protocol.

Read more: https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... or-jockeys

It's about time, and I hope other tracks will follow Keeneland's lead in this matter.
You know your sport is falling behind the times when even the PBR started concussion protocols with baseline exams well before horse racing.
