Jockey Norberto Arroyo is off his only mount on Thursday - Onzaway (3) - in the third race after failing to show in the jockey's room at the appointed time, an hour before post time, according to track stewards.

Arroyo has been replaced by Martin Pedroza. Arroyo was not reachable by phone Thursday afternoon.

Arroyo has had a tough Del Mar. He does not have an agent and is no longer riding for trainer Peter Miller, with whom he had a successful relationship in the first six months of the year, winning more than 40 races. Miller said at the start of the meeting that he would no longer use Arroyo on his horses.

I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

D'Amato's Spectator romps in Sorrento Stakes
As great as this Del Mar meet has been for trainer Phil D’Amato, it has been maddening for trainer Peter Miller. Their differing fortunes played out glaringly in the Grade 2, $200,690 Sorrento Stakes on Saturday, when D’Amato’s 2-year-old filly Spectator romped to a 5 1/4-length victory over six rivals - two coming from Miller’s barn, including even-money favorite Surrender Now, who finished last.
...
By contrast, Miller – who finished second in the trainers standings to D’Amato here last summer and has been a consistent force on this circuit for years – is 5 for 59 following the Sorrento, and he complained that the track was “bad.”

“It’s deep, tiring. It’s very unfair – and you can quote me,” Miller said. “They say it’s like Santa Anita. It’s nothing like Santa Anita.”

Surrender Now was favored off two wins at Santa Anita, including the Landaluce Stakes, in her two prior starts.

Her jockey, Flavien Prat, said Surrender Now “stopped pretty badly at the quarter pole, so I just took care of her.”

Short Film Peers Into ‘Brutal’ Life Of Small-Time Jockey
A new short feature film provides an eye-opening window into the idea of athletes playing through pain, specifically a small-circuit jockey who refuses to take off his mounts despite a debilitating injury.

The 11-minute film premiered in June on Short of the Week, a website devoted to high-quality movie shorts.

The film, shot at Retama Park in San Antonio, takes place over the course of one racing card. The main character, a jockey named Gabriel (played by Luis Bordonada), insists he must finish out the final races of the evening despite having broken his collarbone in a spill earlier in the day. The film's director and producer, Clint Bentley, is the son of a former jockey.

Biancone Granted a Conditonal License in Kentucky
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission granted Patrick Biancone a conditional license to resume training Thoroughbreds during their monthly meeting Aug. 15. The vote, which was 16-1, came after the KHRC license review committee added two conditions to his application on July 19.

Biancone has not had a license in Kentucky since 2007 following the discovery of cobra venom in his Keeneland barn and he was handed a one-year suspension.

"There's a point where you have served your time and you're clean and that's when you give people a second chance," said Dr. Foster Northrop, who was on the commission when Biancone was originally suspended. "That's where we're at. I've gotten more comments on the racetrack over this than anything in the 50 to 60 years I've served on commissions. I've gotten a lot of flack. But they guy has served his time. Isn't that what the justice system is all about?"

Motion Win in Kentucky Courts Could Affect Absolute Insurer Rule
A Kentucky court has ruled in favor of trainer Graham Motion and owner George Strawbridge, tossing out the penalties assessed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission after their horse Kitten’s Point (Kitten’s Joy) tested positive for the medication Methocarbamol following her win in the GIII Bewitch S. in 2015 at Keeneland. Franklin Circuit Court Judge Thomas Wingate justified his decision, in part, on his finding that the “KHRC’s creation of an ‘absolute insurer rule’ for trainers is unconstitutional.”

That portion of the ruling could mean the beginning of the end of the trainer responsibility rule. The rule is a long-standing provision in American racing that whenever a horse tests positive for an illegal medication or drug, the horse’s trainer, no matter the circumstances, is responsible and subject to penalties.

Juarez pays his debt in full to old friend Valid

Valid was an important horse early in the career of jockey Nik Juarez. Now, Juarez is paying Valid back by providing him with a good retirement.

Juarez, 24, won his first career stakes on Valid in the Grade 3 Iselin at Monmouth Park in 2015. Later that year, trainer Marcus Vitali and owner Carolyn Vogel let Juarez ride Valid in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. They finished fifth.

‘A Cop And A Cowboy’: Assistant Trainer Reflects On Luck, Love Of Horses, And Career

For six weeks every summer, Saratoga horsemen live to the rhythm of workouts, races, dinners, meetings, and the beat of Caroline Street. The return to Belmont is always a change of pace. The summer is over, and the barn is a little quieter. When Gary Contessa moves his stable back to Long Island this year though, there will be another reason the shedrow, the paddock, and the office are a little stiller: Contessa's assistant of the past eight years and friend for four decades, John Diaz, will be retiring to Florida at the end of the Saratoga meet.

I see that Flavien Prat is riding 4 for Baffert on Saturday, including St. Patrick's Day. I wonder if Martin Garcia's ride on Nero put him back in the doghouse?

IIRC, Garcia was involved in a bad spill when the filly, Vitality, broke down and rolled on top of him. He has said that his safety vest saved his life, but maybe he's really bruised from that and has taken off some mounts?

Pretty sure he's riding the 2 Anchor Baby for Baffert in the upcoming 4th race at Del Mar, 7/2odds and 14 minutes away.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.
