Wasn't sure where to put this. If you haven't read the 4 part series that Tere Albanese did with Mandella, it is worth settling in with a cup of coffee or tea and reading.

He is my top 3 favorite trainer. Looking at what he did with Bal a Bali, a 7 year old horse, just getting into his prime.......genius........ like one commenter said, NOBODY takes this kind of time with a horse. (I often think of all the horses we will never hear about because nobody sticks with them and develops them anymore)

(I have the documentary On The Muscle: Portrait Of A Thoroughbred Racing Stable --- it is the best behind the scenes look at a barn I've ever seen, during breeders cup with pleasantly perfect, etc. which is also OUTSTANDING)

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

Part 4:

There is just so much INSIGHT here.

If you followed the Tere Albanese series she did on trainer Frankel, you'll appreciate this one even more!

Alvarado to have shoulder surgery
By David Grening
ELMONT, N.Y. – Junior Alvarado will undergo surgery to repair his left shoulder and be out of action about two months, according to his agent, Mike Sellitto.
Alvarado was injured in a spill at Aqueduct on Sunday’s closing-day card. Though X-rays revealed no fractures, an MRI taken on Tuesday did show some minor damage to the shoulder. Alvarado had surgery on that same shoulder last December to repair a tear in his rotator cuff.
Sellitto said Alvarado’s doctor told him that without the surgery, there would be no guarantee that his shoulder would not pop out of its socket while riding.
“You can’t ride if your shoulder has a shot to pop out,” Sellitto said.
The surgery will be performed Tuesday, and if he comes back in the expected time frame, Alvarado should be back in time to ride the end of the Belmont spring-summer meet and most certainly by Saratoga.

I hope the surgery is successful. Chronic rotator cuff problems suck. :(

John O'Shea has reportedly resigned as Godolphin Australia's trainer.

O'Shea is believed to be in the process of negotiating a severance package, three years into a five-year contract.

He took over the high-pressure role from Peter Snowden in May, 2014 and has trained 10 Group One winners under Sheikh Mohammed's Darley and Godolphin banner.

According to the Godolphin website, he trains over 200 horses for the operation. Not sure who could replace him, maybe Lee and Anthony Freedman?

Interesting timing.
If you remember, three weeks ago the 2-mile G1 Sydney Cup was called off during the running due to the fatal injury to Almoonqith, who couldn't be moved off the stretch in time for the runners to pass safely.
They re-ran the race last Saturday (Friday night for us) and the Godolphin runner (can't remember the name off the top of my head...sorry) who 'finished first' during the first running won the encore.
There had been some discussion by the on-track Aussie commentators about whether the Godolphin horses would stick around, IF there was a decision to rerun the race, instead of shipping home as planned.
I wonder if there was some disagreement between the Godolphin powers-that-be and O'Shea about how they should proceed? :? Keeping their horses around when there may have been plans for them to target races elsewhere, along with trying to keep the horses fit for two more weeks, may have not been what the trainer wanted to do.

Polarisation won the Sydney Cup, but he was trained by Charlie Appleby, rather than O'Shea.

Thanks for that correction. With O'Shea stepping away, I wonder if Appleby will be getting more Godolphin horses in his barn.
I heard last night from TVG's Candace that O'Shea isn't just parting company with the Boys in Blue; he's going to take time off from training altogether. Sounded like he's suffering from burnout.

Appleby has over 90 horses in training for Godolphin in Newmarket, but given the remarkable success he has had with shipping some of his second stringers to Australia for their Spring and Autumn Carnivals, maybe he (or his travelling lads) get some more responsibility with the O'Shea horses that are permanently based in Australia.

I am not surprised that O'Shea is taking a break or seems burned out. According to Godolphin's website, he has 207 horses in training for Godolphin, while Appleby has 91 and Saeed Bin Suroor has 109. Working for Sheikh Mohammed is stressful enough as it is, but with those kinds of numbers, and considering he was replacing the excellent Peter Snowden, it has to take it's toll.

Here's a breakdown of the Godolphin horses in training if anyone is interested:

I'm sure she'd of rather been in Louisville, but Chantal Sutherland got her 1,000th win on Saturday at Santa Anita.

I wonder how long it will be before Shah also moves his horses away from. Art Sherman?
